Hey everyone i'm just wondering if anyone else watches family guy and hears the constant digs at diabetes on some of the show's.. It really does my head in. I know it's only a joke ect but some people don't actually realise how hard diabetes can be to live with and should realise it's a serious condition not to be joked about! Anyone else agree? Laura.

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I haven't watched Family Guy and as a result have not heard the jokes. I Googled Seth Macfarlane and diabetes and got bits of Twitter that he is involved in ....

Seth MacFarlane
Entertainment Weekly reviewed "Going the Distance" as "A light and tasty morsel of a romantic comedy." In other news, I now have diabetes.

Maybe he is trying to joke his way out of it or have I misunderstood entirely.

I watch family guy and I do remember one episode where they showed a morbidly obese man who lived on the back of a flat bed truck and had a foot missing through amputation who was offered a chocolate and said "I can't eat those on account of my diabetes" BUT then seconds later grabbed the box and proceeded to eat the whole box!...Bad taste and horrible stereotyping of the condition in my opinion!

I do watch family guy and american dad and have also noticed alot of diabetic jokes which I do cringe at. There are also alot of other jokes aimed at disabilty and other medical conditions, especially the episodes with joe in his wheelchair. Seth mcfarlane does like to push the boundries with controversy with no subject off limit. the 2 shows are like marmite love it or hate it. I do love them but do cringe at some of the jokes.

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I don't watch it regularly, but i have seen "Family guy" and it seems to specialise in Dubious jokes.
i expect the diabetes thing is part of a pattern.
I did see Seth Macfarlane on a concert platform on BBC4 [I think] and he's a talented musician!

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I find jokes about any medical condition distasteful and wouldn't want to watch Family Guy for that reason, just a shame they need to resort to such tactics to get a laugh

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

All I can say is if you don't like, don't watch it! I love Family Guy.

I'm not saying i don't like family guy.. Just some of the jokes they take to far. At the end of the day diabetic's are not obese people who crave sugary things.. But this is what they portray every diabetic to be. It won't stop me watching as i enjoy most of the show's.. Just don't expect me to laugh at the diabetic jokes :|

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I love family guy but its true their diabetic jokes arent funny.
im watching it now and brian was going on about something and then joe said 'peter your dogs given me diabetes' I dont get it? does the writer even know what diabetes is? or am I missing something here?

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I'm sure the writers of the show know nothing about diabetes, or cerebral palsy, MS or most of the other ailments they poke fun at, including gay/ lesbian activity! And that's the thing, they are writing comedy which appeals to the masses!

Despite having it, ( or maybe because..) I like to take the p155 out of diabetes! Live on!

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

Well said Bob!! I love family guy and I'm diabetic and I've laughed at the diabetic jokes.

Are we maybe just more sensitive to these jokes because they are relevant to our own lives?

Frankie Boyle got in trouble for joking that after our recent years of involvement in various armed conflicts that we'd end up with a great paralympics team at 2012..... It's well known that the armed forces have some of the darkest, sickest humour there is and a lot of what critics would class as 'going too far' the service men & women actually find hilarious rather than offensive. A huge number come out and spoke in support of Frankie. It's a way of dealing with the grim things they have to face.... The same goes for dealing with diabetes.

It's comedy. It's entertainment. Family Guy isn't trying to present a factual portrayal of an often debilitating condition. They're trying to get a laugh and if we can't laugh at ourselves what hope have we got?!

I do understand that some people just can't react like that though.... But I just sort of feel, why get upset about it?! It's a joke that makes generalisations and stereotypes but then so do so many jokes/tv shows/etc. Chuckle and move. :D

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

Basically - if it's funny, I laugh. I couldn't care less if anyone in the room is offended by it. However, a lot of these jokes just aren't funny - but some people still laugh at them? That I don't get.

But then, I do have a hyper-developed sense of humour:

I agree with both your points, just for me i'm quite sensitive to diabetes jokes for the fact diabetes has been quite hard to live with ect. Although life's too short and if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at :)

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

That's understandable... I guess we all have our sensitivities. Diabetes has been very difficult for me too and I expect, at times, everyone with diabetes finds it very hard to cope. It's a hard thing to deal with and it impacts your entire life - people who don't have diabetes don't and can't understand fully what it's like.

But laughter is so good for you, mind and body! I think if I didn't laugh at my health problems and all the trouble they cause me, I might have taken a long walk off a short cliff years ago, Haha!

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

Im not surprised that Diabetes if laughed, is all i hear is the government telling everyone how much diabetics cost the country and that its caused by fast food and over eating and people seem to have a view that we all cause ourselves to be diabetic and the only people that make a joke about it are the people that dont have it, anyone who knows a biabetic person or people that have it I never see making the jokes. Lol well that my two pennies worth and only my opinion...

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

I have stopped watching the show because of the one up-manship of fecal humor. It seems to me that it is very good writing on many matters that really occur in everyday life as opposed to most scripts that seem to represent human-like individuals living in an alternate universe. The characters are so universally flawed that we are drawn to take opposite opinions to whatever conclusions Peter decides. I am much more depressed by close friends and family who consistently comfort themselves by asking, "Are you watching yourself more closely?" after learning of a hypoglycemic period. It is a very complex disease, and "thinking like a pancreas" isn't always so successful.

I can and do laugh at myself, my disease and my reliance on medical supplies, advances and education to go on for another day. I have been type 1 since 1952 and look forward to laughing for quite a while.

Re: Family Guy & Diabetes Jokes!

Hi, it's a cartoon for goodness sake, so let it be a cartoon, many other programmes take the mickey and no one makes a complaint.
