Fan hits soft substance

Over £1 million pound to one person linked to these studies is absolutely appalling. I knew there are always "backers" to research but this is just plain bribery....

Someone will remember the name but for the moment it escapes me. He wrote a book about research and funding for such as this, I'm sure he wrote for the Guardian too. He says that how can we believe what is written when its funded by the same people who it benefits. Gold something springs to mind for his last name.

After tobacco, statins, why should any of this be a surprise? Money trumps everything in this sick world of ours.

The name your after is Ben Goldacre, he wrote Bad Pharma and Bad Science exactly on this topic.

He has a regular bad science column in one of the papers (grauniad I think). Always worth a read.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, scientists find what you pay them to find. Everytime I hear something coming over the car radio like 'scientists' say tomato sauce is good for you or chocolate is good for you, the first thing I ask myself is who paid them to say that, - Heinz, Cadbury?
I am hugely sceptical of the '2000 scientists' who report on global warming as I simply don't believe that the billions that the UN is spending on this research produces unbiased results. Equally, any group of scientists who say that global warming isn't man made are probably having their research funded by oil companies and the automotive industry.

As far as the sugar industry goes I am sure that I saw a Panorama programme (or perhaps This Week or something similar) over a decade ago where it was reported that the big sugar companies were completely ruthless when it came to preventing any negative information from being published. This extended to the point of threating individual scientists and their families.

His books are good, I have read them. I refuse to take a statin now look at all the data crawling out of the woodwork this week about them.
