Fasting and blood glucose levels

Hi, I’ve started intermittent fasting, this is the start of my second day (keto fast 800) . Last night I was down at 7.2 which is the lowest I’ve been in years, I haven’t eaten since 6pm last night, it’s now 8:40 am and I’m away up at 17! I’m always higher in the morning and I know why but I’m just wondering if there’s anyone that’s experienced the same thing when starting this way of eating? Will this settle down as I continue with the fasting ? Thank you

Hi Lambsboots and welcome. I don't know what type of diabetes you have or for how long etc (it's a good idea to fill out the "about" information, you'll get better replies) so I'm just going to offer some personal experience.

I don't know what your "keto fast 800" diet consists of - the "fast 800" i'm familiar with is the Mosley 800 calorie one - depending how you do it, it might be keto, might not. I go for around 20g carb/day, no idea how many calories. I eat when I'm hungry, which is usually only once a day, often less. This puts me in IF territory, but I never set out to do IF, it just happened.

My experience at the beginning was that 20g/day does lower BG, but not immediately. The liver releases glucose from stores in an attempt to maintain what it thinks are the customary BG levels. Maybe you're at the extreme end of that?

In addition, there's the possibility of a rogue result - eg a re-used test strip can give an alarmingly high figure. Did you confirm the 17 with a second reading?
