I believe the fasting convention is 12 hours with only water or black tea, so understandably most (all?) do it overnight. This usually means testing early morning when the effects of dawn syndrome might be still hanging around. Is it better to leave it a bit longer or is that like cheating?

(I know what you're going to say, do some time series BG tests and find out, but I thought I'd ask the question first).

When I get an appointment to go to the surgery for a fasting test they tell me to fast for 14 hours but that's not the issue. Because I go to the surgery the blood sample isn't taken until I get there at the appointed time and this is not always early The next one is at 0845 which is earlyish but they have been as late as 10:** before. What price dawn phenomenon then.

You are not cheating as much as the surgery is.
