Fasting test for low insulin?

I'm sure I have seen somewhere a protocol for using periods of fasting to test for low insulin production. When I Google, I just get the C-peptide test. Before paying nearly £200 for this I would like to do a preliminary test at home, but I don't remember how many hours of fasting are recommended. Please could anyone advise, or point me towards a post covering this? (NB I am not talking about drawing my own blood at home and sending it off to be tested. I just intend to fast so as to check whether my bg will go up all by itself, not in reaction to any food I have eaten. I am pretty sure it will.) Thanks.
