Hi,

On browsing I found this board and hoped you might be able to help. For the last 2-3 days glucose meter keeps telling me my BS is HI after I've eaten - yesterday at 8pm it was HI, and again at 9pm so I just went to bed as I felt foul (probably psycological) but this morning when I checked before food it was 8.4. I've had no ketones when it is apparently high either, just glucose on the dipstick. Do you think it's really going this high, or has my meter gone up the creek?!

Jenny

Hey JennyB,

Did you ueat something carby/sugary? Forget to take your insulin? Have sweet stuff on your fingers? (I once got a reading of 30 and thought it was weird so I washed my hands and dd it again to get a reading of 12!!)

You should have got some testing solution for your meter which should tell you if it's working ok. In my experinece it's more likely to be human error than the meter going wonky

Katie.

Hi Jenny ,welcome to the forum. If your urine test is showing glucose then your Blood Sugars must be quite high.I can't remember the exact number but I'm sure somebody with a more retentive memory will!Have you changed your diet recently or ,perhaps been ill or very stressed. All these things can change your blood sugar levels.I suggest that you go and see your doctor for a blood test to see if your medication needs adjusting.

Meters are pretty reliable. you can get asolution from the supplier to check it's calibration. You can also go to a pharmacy to get a confirmation of your reading. Most will do this for you.

With my meter you are advised to perform a control test every time you open a new box of test strips and:
If you left the strip container open.
To check the meter is working ok.
If your readings don't match how you feel.
and a couple of other reasons...
...1st thing I'd do is conduct a control test and rule out any likely faults.

Chances are that's what's wrong.

Thanks for the advice guys! I'm pretty new to this so had forgotten about the control solution. 90 mins post dinner just now, and using new box of test strips and reading was 15.4 - still not quite right but not so terrifying as reading HI!
