Fed Up

My GP is very good in some areas but let's himself down in other areas. He is very old school.

Marcus - Under the NHS you are entitled to a second opinion on things. I always knew I could get a second opinion, but it was my GP who explained to me how it worked, when she called me for feedback on a specialist consultation I'd had (about something not related to diabetes), when I had found the Consultant disinterested.

She explained I could not only have a second opinion, but if I knew whom I wanted that second opinion from, she could make a named referral, so that I would see a particular person (not anyone else or even a member of their team). I both accepted her offer of a second opinion and I nominated the perreson I wanted to see.

Please don't think I'm trying to persuade you to do anything; I'm just feeding back my personal experience.

That is what puzzled me, I have reduced my cholesterol in the past. My GP says that because it has reached 7.5 that it is now FH genetic and when it gets back to normal levels I will be kept on a lower dose 10mg statins for the rest of my life.

He isn't really correct. It is an indicator of FH but not a reason to diagnose. Further investigations have to be done.

The NICE guidelines says:

1.3.7 Consider the possibility of familial hypercholesterolaemia and investigate as described in familial hypercholesterolaemia (NICE guideline CG71) if they have:

  • a total cholesterol concentration more than 7.5 mmol/litre and

  • a family history of premature coronary heart disease. [new 2014]
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg71
https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg...d-assessing-cardiovascular-disease-cvd-risk-2

So your doctor should not have diagnosed FH but should be investigating it further.

Marcus - I just wanted to reach out to say that you are not alone in having to deal with all of this alongside your health anxiety. My husband is in a very similar position and it can be debilitating at times. The most important things are that you are self aware and have good support. You will get through this, like I keep telling my husband. Do take care of yourself.

I was puzzled myself with what the doctor said, and when I read into further extra testing was advised.
I will speak with the nurse tomorrow, it is my first diabetic app with the nurse.
Thanks

No, not pathetic at all. I used to take my Mum shopping on Fridays. One day she asked to go on Thursday instead because Friday was the 13th. I wish I hadn't listened to her, I had a car accident on Thursday 12th!

Does that mean you have a genetic condition which comes and goes? Seems more than a little strange. Were you referred to a lipid specialist?

I felt less like a powerless victim of circumstance and genes when I took control of my type 2 and cholesterol through a high fat, low carb diet... I'm off statins now and eat bacon, sometimes 3 times a day. Cholesterol's fine, HbA1c 34, no meds. Some need a little medicinal help, but both metformin and statins had so many extremely unpleasant sude effects for me, I'm still thankful for a LCHF/keto alternative that does work for me. Good luck, and enjoy your vacation!
