Is it normal to feel a bit like i'm going hypo around the 5.0 mark?

This is because you are used to running too high. If your blood sugars are usually in the tens +, You will feel hypo at 5.
This is your body telling you that you need tighter control. If you do not want complications, you should not let you blood sugars go higher than 7.7.
Have you tried a lower carb diet?
Are you excercising?

Thankyou yeah they've been higher than they should be to be honest and recently it's been hard to get exercise because of the weather

If your bg levels have been running high for some time and you suddenly tighten things up you can get what they call False Hypo's, over time your body will adjust to the lower levels are these symptoms will disappear, just be sure to check when you feel these hypo symptoms come on as you could actually be having a hypo.

i completely get that Jonathan. Perhaps you could time your insulin better too. Test before eating. If its above 5, then take your insulin first and eat something with fat like a peice of cheese or almonds (that helps to stabilise the blood more and prevent the spike) - wait 15 mins for the insulin to start working, then eat your meal.
I also find that if im heading to the 8's, I do some burpees or star jumps for 3/4 mins in my room which has also helped me. Sounds a bit mad but it really helps and on the plus side.... youll have a better physique...lol
Having diabetes is hard at the best of times but once youre in control, it gets easier.

Youre a growing lad so I guess you need carbs..... but theres some good carbs and some bad carbs. Stick to the sweet potatoes, brown rice / pasta and wholemeals. i find dark chocolate works well too.

If you need any advice, this forum is brilliant and feel free to ask me anything if ever youre unsure of anything.

As you bring your sugars down...the hypo feeling at 5 will go. Just dont treat the hypo feelings at 5. Keep testing.
Id only treat the hypo if Im closer to 4 but then perhaps with just 3 jelly babies or 100ml lucozade followed by a small banana or a digestive.

Wrap up warm and get out for a walk, it's one of the best forms of exercise IMHO.
