Diabetes!! People who dont understand. Being overweight and hungry.
I am almost certain I have been feeling sick and bad because of the Metformin, so I only took one yesterday and Ive had none at all today and my headache has almost gone, my stomach has stopped churning, I havent felt like vomiting again, and the metallic taste is almost bearable now.
I really dont want to take them again unless I really have to because I took 3 days off work, where I thought it could be a stomach bug.
Is it safe to go without all weekend and try to see my GP or nurse on Monday?

Yes go see your doctor on Monday. I would say its safe to stop so long as you don't eat anything too sweet or starchy carby in the meantime. Were you on the standard stuff or the slow release stuff? If you were on the standard stuff the symptoms you gave are pretty common so before thinking about giving it up completely I'd ask to try the SR version as it is a very effective drug if you can find away around the side effects.

I agree. No harm in stopping it temporarily, but tell the doc you want the slow release version that won't give you these side effects

Yes I am on the standard version, I was ok on one a day but as I built up to three the symptoms started.
I will ask for the SR version, Ive been told its enteric coated so doesnt start working until its actually in the gut, which sounds better to me.

I am being careful with what I eat too, although I did sneak a few of my nephews chocolate buttons yesterday, and I havent eaten chocolate since being diagnosed.

hi Tiny - if you try both versions of metformin and it doesn't agree... don't bother with it. I was on that stuff for years on all the different doses and versions... it just didn't agree with me full stop. I was sick all the time. Funnily enough you don't find much about it's long term side effects and you don't find information about when it doesn't agree with people either. Personally I found it to be ghastly... and my stomach hasn't been the same ever since either. I'm now on insulin and have much better control than I used to on oral drugs and diet alone. Speak to your doc about what other options are available if you need to... all the best. :)

It wouldnt suprise me if I had a sensitivity to something in it, as my IBS makes me sensitive to lots of things even though it has settled down quite a bit and the meds Im on for it have helped. I also made sure I took it with food, as my stomach usually plays up if I dont take meds with food or antibiotics with Yackult.

I'm wheat intollerant which was misdiagnosed as IBS. I have always been on the standard metformin and it gave me terrible stomach problems and the runs. Since cutting out wheat, I don't have problems with metformin, only when I have had accidental wheat in my diet do I suffer. Its not the easiest food choices to have, but I don't replace the wheat products with gluten free ones, so this cuts my carb intake. It is not easy to get a snack out - thank goodness for M&S salads.

For a long time my IBS made me quite ill and I hardly ate anything at all because I was so bad. Things have gradually been reintroduced and Im a lot better, but in order for this to happen Im on 40mg of Citalapram antidepressent a day to stop the gut spasms. I cant imagine how hard a wheat intolerance could be, as thats how I was initially treated and was hard

hmmm.... just a thought.... maybe metformin shouldn't be prescribed if you have an existing stomach ailment. I think that could perhaps have been my problem. I'm still trying to get to bottom of my stomach problem... symptoms drive me nuts.
