Feeling down....

Hi! I've posted a few times before but then either start being good or ignore my problems altogether!

I'm type one (just had my HBA1C back at 9.7!), am also a coeliac with an underactive thyroid! Went to Diabetic Clinic on Wednesday and I need to do something as my kidneys aren't looking good and am being refered to the Diabetic Kidney Clinic.

I am worried sick and the strange thing is I know it is my fault. I take my medication for a few weeks / months and then I just stop, everything!

The consultant I saw on Wednesday has now set me up so I see the specialist nurse every two weeks so this should hopefully help. Am I the only one who does this? How can I sort myself out before it is too late?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi

What a complination to deal with...

You say that you have LADA diabetes (slow onset) I'm suprised that they haven't suggested a quick acting insulin to deal with food...

You do need to tackle the underactive thyroid, as a underactive thyroid will effect the blood sugars and make them more difficult to control, also it can cause symptoms of depression which again could have a impact on how you deal with the day to day control.. If you can get this sorted then hopefully the rest will be easier to manage.

It seems that the hospital is going to try there best to support you with extra DSN appointments, if I was you I would try to concertrate on one day at a time as this will be easier than trying to cope with looking at it as a whole future thing...

Take care ask the question you need, and on bad days post for encourage etc..

Take care

Hi Ands

I am also under the care of a nephrologist at the moment, so understand some of what you're feeling, but I don't have coeliac or thyroid problems.

What sort of blood numbers are you getting that have triggered the referral (creatinine, GFR etc). What's your blood pressure like? This made a huge difference to my eyes and kidneys when I finally beat the hypertension.

All the best, Jo

Thanks for the support.

I'm not sure all my blood results yet as only had them taken on Wednedsay (that said my GP phoned late yesterday as she was concerned about some readings, and to have a phone call from them they must be bad!). I've been leaking protien in my urine since 05 when it was picked up during my last pregnancy. It has been on going since then. The consultant has just said he wants to keep uping my Candesartan every two weeks until I reach the higest level that I can cope with! The problem (well it's not a problem really) is that my blood pressure is great so I have difficultly when taking these tablets. They are going to check my bloods and blood pressure every two weeks to ensure that I can cope. The last time we tried to do this I was lost in the system and had to try and do it myself! So fingers crossed this time I will make a difference.

I am only 32 so it is all a worry...

My proteinuria has reduced to zero since cracking the hypertension nut, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you too!

One thing your GP or hospital may do is fit you with a 24 hour monitor, just to see what is happening to your bp over a "typical" 24 hour period (like those happen so often!). I also invested in a home blood pressure monitor, one of the expensive ones with a cuff like you'd see at a GP's surgery or in a hospital. It was £100 but well worth it for the peace of mind of being able to check bp at any time.

You may end up on more drugs than just the Candesartan - I have 3 different bp meds - but it is so worth sorting out, your eyes will benefit as well.

Thanks for words of encouragement. It is good to think I might be able to undo some of the damage I have clearly already done or at least stop any further damage.

My Nan had a stroke two weeks ago (she is 89) and although she is that much older the thought that that could be me in 20 years is frightening. I would hate to be trapped at the age of 50ish which my consultant said is a real possibility.

I have so far been good since Wednesday and taking all my tablets / insulin. The only problem with that is the kick back after having none in my system for a while, I woke with a BG reading of 3.5 this morning!

Have come to the conclusion I might take some time off work, something I hate doing but if I'm going to sort this I need to put myself first (something I'm not good at with two children aged 5 and 7, a hard working husband and a 4 month old puppy, working 25 hours a week and now a Nan in hospital!).

Thanks a lot for your support. Its means a lot to have someone who understands.
