On Thursday evening my daughter said she felt hypo as she has done many time before. We checked and double checked BG and it was 8.6. She looked hypo, was shacking and complaining of tingling in feet. All very typical for her. Not knowing what to do and confused by BG readings I treated as hypo. gave remedy and snack re checked bg after 15-20 minutes it had only gone up to 8.8. She remained to feel tingling. After s few minutes she complained it was getting worse re checked BG and it had gone down to 6.6. Repeated above and exactly same happened. Took 2hours to see significant rise in BG and hypo feeling to stop. This happened again Friday so she was admitted to hospital. Doctors no idea. She was diagnosed epileptic within 12hours of type 1 so I know this is an unusual case. But her fits don't look or feel like hypos.

Any ideas??????? I have had a great response to previous posts 'diabetes and fits' So anyone/ someone out there with anything helpful or positive get typing.

Finally found someone who is the same as me. I get the symptoms of a Mild hypo alot, I check my bg and there like between 7 and 8. Im not epilepsic im just type 1. Type 1 diabetes is the only thing i have really.

Thanks,

Thanks for your reply. Can I ask how long the feeling last? I believe they are linked to her diabetes. There seems to be a pattern of about an hour after food. Meeting with diabetic nurse on Tuesday so will keep you posted.

hi donnamum,
Now and again I feel a bit "hypo" after meals (45min - hour).
When I do a test my sugars are fine. I've always put it down to my body's reaction to the
rate that the sugars are dropping rather than the actual level the sugars are at.

hope this helps,

Hi donnamum.
Ye, i had this problem for a few months a while back. My diabetes team said that it was because body was used to having high blood sugars, so when my sugars where at the normal range I would feel hypo. The only solution they said was basically just had to ride it out so my body would get used to having normal blood sugars. So this meant no dextose tablets or a snack which just about killed me but it only took about a week to when i started to feel normal when i was actually normal.
Hope that's at least some help.

I agree with the last comments. This happened to me in the first few months after diagnosis. Istill very occasionally suffer from unexplained symptoms, some 8 years later. If the BG is dropping fast the rest of the body seems to notice effects before the measured level at the finger tips picks it up. This might explain why even after a snack, there is no measurable increase in BG.

The only safe thing to do is to take extra measurements to monitor the situation.

How long after food was the blood test? If the body is still processing food you will be testing the sugar levels of the food rather than the actual blood sugar if that makes sense.
