feeling left high and dry

This is how I've felt since yesterday when I phoned the surgery for the results of blood tests. Diagnosed Christmas Eve. Given metformin and simvastitin. Handed a piece of paper with this website on it and told to look on it for advice and support. Had fortnightly appointments since then. Metformin didn't agree with me and still nurse told me to persevere with it. Couldn't cope so she reluctantly put me on the slow release metformin. Still felt unwell at the last visit and she did a blood test. Told me to stop the metformin.
She did a test and it was 8. She said it wasn't ''too bad'.' I told her I felt generally unwell. Itching skin, feeling really tired, itchy vagina. ''Oh dear''. was the response. When she told me to stop the metformin, she said ''We'll have to think of something else and said she would give me a meter and strips and show me how to use it. Fine. That would work for me. I had already got myself a free meter and some free strips and felt I would tell her it was OK with me. Throughout the whole appointment, she had to phone her colleague several times to get advice as to what to do. I have lost weight as advised and changed my diet completely. By the end of the appointment, she had decided along with her colleague that they wouldn't let me self-test. Yesterday on the phone she told me to keep up with the weight loss regime and they would see me in 3 months. I asked her how I would know if my blood sugar went up. She said 'make an appointment.'' I feel as I have been left to it. In all this time, Ihave not been able to get past her to see the doctor. Have not had any explanations of how to go about coping with the diabetes. I am seeing the doctor this morning with a double appointment as I'm not happy with the way my treatment has been conducted. I have had episodes of feeling lightheaded after eating, feeling clammy, etc. Am I over-reacting. Any other time i.e. polymalgia, high blood pressure, etc. I have discussed the symptoms and treatment. What's so different about the diabetes? Sorry it's long, really stressed out.

Hi dusky,
You are right to be concerned. This is your health and future.

If I was you, I would print out your post and take it with you and show your G.P. Your concerns are there for him to see and hopefully he will give you answers.
Take care and let us know how you get on.

Well, I'm off to see the doctor now. After I made the appointment with the doctor this morning, the diabetic nurse phoned me and said ''I see you've made an appointment with the doctor''. She wanted to know what the problem was. I told her that at nearly 64 years of age, I am quite capable of taking responsibility for my condition but I expected to be educated about it after the diagnosis was given, and I didn't feel that this has happened.
I will give an update when I've seen the doctor this morning.

We've set up a petition that looks to heighten awareness of the lack of access to blood glucose testing.

It's a real shame, as catherine says.

The testing has helped to build some confidence and yet they're do a U-tun and leave you 'high and dry'.

If you can give proof that the testing has helped you, you may be able to challenge their decision.

Have a read of the advice we have here

In addition please sign our petition

And please see how you can share the petition so that others can sign the petition to stop others with diabetes being left high and dry as well

With best wishes

Hi Dusky

In some ways you have been lucky in having a surgery that recommended this website; that shows an enlightened approach. It's a pity even Met SR isn't OK for you as it is the 1st choice for insulin resistant i.e. over-weight T2s although it isn't a miracle cure. A low-carb diet is probably the best way forward and as you say you have changed your diet. If you are now eating the right things you really should see a reducion in your BS and any thrush. You can get a meter for free from many of the suppliers and you can buy strips at a discount on the web and choose a site that sells to you VAT free if you confirm you have diabetes.
