Hi all,
I was hoping someone would post replies on my earlier thread but not yet :(

I am 43 and feel tired, old and generally unwell most of the time Is this normal ?

My BS run in he teens most of the time, I do not carb count but am starting tomorrow.

How do I feel my age again ? x

i think BS in teens won't be helping this feeling. hope that getting those carbs down can reduce BS & help you feel better.

Before I was diagnosed and before lowering my BGs I was feeling very tired but getting BGs down by watching my diet and reducing my carbs I feel much fitter and far less tired .If that doesnt help go to your GP and ask for blood tests for iron and vit D There is another thread on here about that .You may be interested in that . Dont despair :D

No it isn't normal Nicola despite you have had diabetes for 30 years, as Carol says I would discuss this with your gp.

Your elevated bg levels need to be addressed as this can make you lethargic, I would book an appointment and get them to look at your control and suggest ways on improving things, you say your starting to carb count tomorrow so unsure if you mean you are enrolling on a carb-counting course such as DAFNE or learning yourself, if it's the latter then you may find the following useful:

Hi Nic,
How long have you been on novorapid and lantus. I see that you've been type 1 for 30 years but how long have you been 'feeling tired and old'. Assuming that you've had the usual tests for thyroids, vit D, etc...it could be that your body cannot take analogue insulins. Think back how you felt BEFORE going on to analogue insulins especially lantus and even levemir. I'm type 1 diagnosed just over 3 years ago. I'm now 63 years old and am an online grocery delivery driver so it's quite physical and my blood sugars drop quickly during my shift. When I was put on levemir then lantus and novorapid I felt very 'tired'/fatigued and I felt drugged up. I was heavy headed one minute then light headed. My speed of walking dropped to like if I was very old and struggling to put one foot in front of the other. My DSN and consultant kept telling me that it was nothing to do with my diabetes but after finally being told by my DSN that she had NO Ideas left, I looked --- tiredness and lantus and lantus problems on the net and found the probable reasons. ..my body couldn't take analogue insulins. I'm now on porcine neutral and porcine isophane insulins and the tiredness/fatigue and drugged up feelings have now all gone. I'm now trying to get my doses/BGs to reasonable figures. They can be high but I can put up with that now all the tiredness have gone and I am feeling so much BETTER.

It might now be the time to ask your diabetes team for you to TRY amimal insulin to see if the tiredness etc goes away. How were you before you went onto analogue insulins. Also, watch how much CARBS you eat. Cereals can cause a big spike in your BGs even when you work out the carb ratio..DAFNE.. GOOD LUCK.
