Hi

I'm new here, I was diganosed in December with type 2, diebetes.

I've always suffered with my mental health and being diganosed type 2 hasn't helped my mental health either.
Before being diganosed, I was only eating once a day, and have been for nearly 19 years. So being told I needed to eat breakfest to take my metaformin was a shock and I hate eating in the morning.
I did try explaining this to the DN, and she just looked at me, and said just eat at 10am. Which is abig no no in my head. So I just decided not to say no more, as I very rarely talk about my eating habits.
On top of all off this, I also have a daughter who suffers terribly with her mental health also.
At times my head feels like its going to explode.
I'm currently taking anti depressants.
I just feel swamped with it right now.
Sorry to ramble on

Hi @shellz78 , welcome to the forum.

Have you been prescribed metformin to take once a day or twice a day?
If once, it doesn't matter with which meal you take it.
The reason it's recommended to take metformin with food is because this lowers the chance of side effects, especially diarrhea. But some don't get that side effect at all, so you could give it a try and see what happens without food, just stay close to the bathroom just in case.

There is also a slow release version of metformin, I think that one is taken once a day (not completely sure about that), which could be an option as well.

Many of our members use intermittent fasting or one meal a day to help with their diabetes, together with some dietary changes, mainly reducing carbs. It may actually be a positive that you already do this and like it. :)

Thank you for your reply.
I'm already on the prolonged release metaformin, and take my full dose all in one go.

I may just stick to going back to my 1 meal a day then, as it's what I find better for me, rather then stressing myself out, having to think of food first thing in the morning.

Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum @shellz78. @Antje77 has pretty much covered the Metformin question. It can come as a shock and be very daunting to get that diabetic diagnosis from your Dr. Know that you are not alone. Have a look around the T2 sub forums. I hope you will find them both informative and you will see we have a supportive and knowledgeable community here. Feel free to ask questions.

Perfect!
I have no idea why the nurse thought it had to be specifically taken with breakfast, especially because you already told her that having to eat breakfast gives you a lot of stress.
