Hi @Nuttymummy,
I have moved your post to the Type1 forum for answers.
I am sure someone will answer, even if they have not had this particular operation, as to how their diabetes was managed before, during and after an operation.

You will put on a sliding scale for surgery, hormones will go to pot so diabetes will be hard to control, but is manageable with plenty of frustration as an added bonus.
You will need to make sure no heavy lifting is done for 3 months and have to take things very easily to start with ie a 10 min walk a day. So make sure you have plenty of help as you have 3 young children. Think well in advance and cook meals and freeze them. Some people also have an emotional melt down due to hormones so do consider HRT to help you out. Good luck.

Ok thank you was wondering if it takes longer to do the op as my gp seems to think its going to be very complicated also healing time

My op took 5 hours. As to healing there shouldn't be a problem as long as you control your blood sugars. 3 months though is the non lifting time though as there is a distinct possibility of a hernia or prolapse if you don't do as you are told. Just remember for your sake you only have the one chance to heal properly. Not sure but think you have a 6 week sick note if working.

Hi Nuttymummy,I had hysterectomy due to 10 + fibroids 4 years ago, Op took just over an hour. Spent 5 days in hospital then recovery time at home was supposedly 8 weeks before driving and 12 weeks with no heavy lifting. I was 45 at the time, I chose to keep my ovaries, if nothing was attached, so I wouldn't come out hospital and go straight into menopause, Insulin was on sliding scale in hospital, sugars ran high as it wasn't my normal insulin plus food was very rich etc. When I got home I was fine. Just take things easy and accept help. I also cooked and froze meals to make life easy when I wasn't here and also so I had food prepared when I got home, as the men in my house don't do cooking lol x

Had a hysterectomy at 28 after being told not poss to have kids.
Best thing ever.
Now 52 this year.
Op - went in on the Tuesday op on Weds. Discharged Friday. Drove 160 miles on the following Monday. Wanted to go back to wirk on that Monday but wasn't allowed so took friends two boys to Bournemouth for a holiday instead.
Had a fantastic surgeon whom I will never forget. I was fitter than all the rest of the women on the ward who had drains and sutures that had to be taken out. Mine.. No drains, dissolving stitches...

I walked down 4 flights of stairs and walked back up on the Thursday after the Tuesday op. I took my bikini in as it was July to sunbathe thinking I was going to be kep in till the Fri or Monday. As soon as they knew I was fitter than the other women (despite T1) I was allowed home supposedly to take it easy.

The only thing that was bad was the fact that as soon as I came round from the op I felt sick, told the nurse and she said " you won't be sick"... Yep, somehow I was.. All over her.:):)

Best thing I ever had done.

Me too, had this about ten years ago (I'm 53 now). But I insisted on keeping my ovaries so only recently seem to have gone through a very mild menopause. I mean, that mild that I can't really tell! I was in for about 5 days. There was no problem with my diabetes. The hospital managed it very well for me while under and in the next few days.
