Hi Daisy!

That's good news - sort of - you know what I mean LOL!

Too many of us LADAs get misdiagnosed as Type 2 based on nothing but age. The fact we still produce a significant amount of insulin in the early stages confuses a not-too-knowledgeable medical profession. Fortunately your doctor had the sense to know when he was out of his depth and refer you for an accurate diagnosis.

The high after food spikes on very few carbs are the dead-giveaway with LADA in my opinion..

They might try to keep you on tablets for a while - maybe adding gliclazide or similar. However, if you are eating so little in order to control your BG that you cannot keep a healthy weight on, in my opinion, it is time to go onto insulin. You might try a basal only at first, but keep a very close eye on your levels, as rapid-acting is a very useful tool in LADA control - it is the after food spikes that are our problem, and that's what rapid-acting is designed to deal with.

Have a think about what you want to do - if you are happy to go straight to insulin, make that clear to your consultant - sometimes they try everything to keep you off insulin because they believe that's what we all want. Personally, it was such a relief for me to go onto insulin after a year of fighting a losing battle on diet and exercise followed by Glic. I still regard insulin as the best choice I ever made.

Take care and let us know how you get on - there are quite a few of us LADAs on here now! I actually think we're taking over LOL.

Thank you Smidge for your reply...I am terrified of being on insulin, but I know there ' s nothing I can do to stop it. I think it might be better to be on it sooner before my pancreas give up completely.I m scared of hypos.Do you get them often? Is it rare to be on insulin and not to have them hypos ? I' m so scared of dying:-(

Hi Daisy.

Please don't be scared of insulin. Have a healthy respect for it but don't be scared. You will not die!

Hypos are a fact of life with insulin unfortunately, but if you are on a low-carb diet, they are usually mild and can be easily treated with a jelly baby or two. I have one or two mild hypos every few weeks generally. I used to have more when I first went onto insulin, but I manage it better now.

The first time I injected insulin I was terrified, but it was easy and the positive impact it had was almost instant. I was able to eat a bit more and keep my BG under control. I also managed to put a bit of weight back on which was important as I was underweight. I got used to insulin very quickly which surprised me as I was almost in tears when the nurse was showing me how to inject.

You'll be fine!

Thanks for reassuring me that insulin is not all bad. I hope my hospital appointment will be soon and the won't be so dismissive and stupid as my DSN.Because she was telling me for 18 months that there is no chance that I am type 1 , and refused to do tests.

I sincerely hope you report this DSN to whoever employs her and is thus responsible for her poor decisions.

Yes I intend to compain about her, but I wait until official type 1 / 1.5 diagnosis as I was so excited about my GAD results that I forgot to ask my doctor if he changed in his computer or are we waiting for hospital team to confirm this

Daisy, yes don't be afraid of insulin. I was diagnosed 7-months ago when I was rushed to hospital. I was put on insulin and over the months have been able to get my BG under control.
I use the Kwik pen. Now I give my shot right at the table and no one ever sees or comments.

No side affects and a lot more control. As for hypos I only get mild ones - after exercise - and I can control with a little bit of raisins and pumpkin seeds.

You will be a pro at it in a couple of weeks. As you learn more you will feel like you are more control of you life and the foods you eat.

Yay .Finally I got to see a specialist diabetic doctor at the hospital. My GAD test came back positive and my c-peptide was low. For a start she told me to take 6 u of Lantus insulin at bedtime. I was given a fancy blood glucose meter Freestyle Insulinx.I was told to record my bs only before bed, before breakfast ,before lunch , end before evening meal. And she said that she will up my lantus dose gradually and then I will have to start taking insulin to cover meals.
After 2 time I took insulin it has done nothing to my morning levels they are around 9 mmol.they were around 9-11 before starting insulin so definitly I dont take enough. What you recon what would be best starting dose? My weight is 78 kg.I am 34.
With low carb before insulin I managed to get my levels from 11-17 to 7.5-11 .So with added insulin they shoud be going even lower that' s the plan.
I wouldnt be getting my type 1 diagnosis if I didnt push for it.
Even tho my dsn refused to do any test to find out whats wrong.
I knew from the start that I didnt fit standard type 2 profile. Normal cholesterol.normal bp.overweight but not obese.aged 32 .weight 87 on diagnosis in 2012.todays weight 78.
