HI All
Brief recap, 12th July had a general blood test which picked up high sugars, was called to surgery on the 18th and told I had diabetes. Sent a letter to arrange appt for Hba1c test, and eye screening both done on 23rd July. Saw Doctor this morning for a lengthy consult and examination. After explaining all about Diabetes he gave me my test results. hba1c 9.6 and cholesterol 6.5, has put me on Simvastatin, one 40mg per day for the cholesterol. Told to try diet and exercise for the next two months and return for further treatment if necessary. Attended a diabetes information afternoon with my DSN and a dietitian. not very exiting but did find out I am hba1c tested every three months in the first year. Upset dietician by mentioning low carb diet, LOL.
No luck on the meter side if things, told it was not necessary, Doc did say it was more for financial savings than anything medical, but did say if I was to go on certain meds at a later stage he would give me one. That's it so far. just glad to being getting on with it now

well done Mercury, you're on the right road, but I would ignore your GP and get yourself a meter ASAP. You need to keep an eye on how different food affects your levels. 9.6 is lower than my 3 month reading, so not TOO bad at all really :)

Hi Mercury

Keep at it and get testing!

Re - your doctor may give you a free meter later, if you go on certain meds ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

So, if you manage to follow the NHS advice and diet you will send your BG's up, progress on to meds and THEN you can have a meter.

WOW - you couldn't make it up.

re your HBA1c of 9.6% that converts to an average mmol of 14.7, too too high.

With your new meter you will be able to take control and bring that down.

Keep a record of your foods and readings. Then you can go back to the doctor with your stats and your lower HBA1c test and say sorry I didn't win the prize of the free meter but I'm glad I didn't play the game.

Good luck - any questions just ask.

Hi mercury, diabetes is a tricky path to walk,, you will come across lots of uneven rough paths but hopefully lots more of the smooth and even ones :) I can tell you from experience it's quite a journey. Keep your level head on and you will do fine. Take care and best wishes RRB
