Hi,

I had my type 2 diagnosis following a routine HbA1c test on 4th January. It was 53. As this test is an average over the previous 2 to 3 months during which time I had no idea I was diabetic, and included Christmas, New Year, my birthday, and a week's holiday in November, how much of a bearing will this have had on the result? I would be interested in your opinions as they were all times of eating and drinking far more than normal..

Hi

As you correctly state your HbA1c score is an indicator of your average blood glucose level over the last 2-3 months. Undoubtably, any excesses over Xmas or other holiday period will have contributed to this score but it is not possible to quantify by how much.

In my opinion it should be of only theoretical interest anyway.

What is important is that you now adopt the correct lifestyle changes to control your diabetes. Your current HbA1c score should be seen as just a benchmark against which you can measure how successful you have been in implementing these changes
