So had my 3rd check up at the doctors Friday went from hb1ac 96 in April to last one being 44 in October, carried on 2 metformin a day but for the last few weeks really struggled keeping sugars up after breakfast till lunchtime so doctor said drop to one a day, anyway that morning after my appointment it dropped to 3.1 I felt awful my heart was thumbing so hard I felt like I was going to pass out! Phoned doctor she said to stop taking the tablets altogether and go and see her Monday. Any advice?? I'm now paranoid my levels are going to go up again? So far today been ok but not sure if out of my system how long does it take??? Also worried it's going to make me more hungry and put on the 2 and half stone I have lost over the last 7 months?? Anyone had similar experience?? Thanks xxxx

Reading between the lines, and looking at the rapid weight loss you have achieved over 7 months, this suggests you are on quite an aggressive diet, most probably low carb, and possibly fasting too. The Metformin does not have much effect on lowering bgl being effective for only 1 or 2 mmol/l or so with a following wind. So stopping the Met will probably not make much immediate difference to bgl but you will lose the appetite suppressant quality it gives, so you will probably eat more, and put weight back on. Eating more carbs will increase bgl.

I think there is a timing element to this problem too. Are you breaking fast with breakfast? Now that your weight has dropped, maybe your liver stores are depleted, and your body is not able to self regulate. You may find adding a small snack in the morning will alleviate the lows. (Metformin is advised to be taken with food)

The other thought that springs to mind is the possibility of Reactive Hypoglycemia, which has its own forum thread on this site, and perhaps a quick scan there may be worthwhile.

Firstly congrats on bringing your hb1ac down. i know weight is an important part of control however eating some snacks may help the hypos particuarly if you are active in the morning. Try not to panic about the hypos they can make you ferl rough but as long as you treat them right they dont last too long.

At your last blood tests, what was your hba1c?
It could have been a rogue reading!
Are you fasting too long?
Do you regularly test your glucose levels?
By that I mean, before and after two hours. Do you ever test after that if you haven't eaten?

It could be anything related to the endocrine system.
Only tests will fully diagnose you.
If the hypos persist, try and get a referral to an endocrinologist who specialises in metabolic conditions.

Best wishes.

Thanks guys for your replies, I have never fasted I love my food too much and I regularly was eating snacks in between breakfast lunch etc probably too many snacks to keep my sugars up I didn't even feel hungry, I cut out all the rubbish cakes crisps chocolate etc and reduced my portion sizes but I was still eating carbs with each meal, bread potatoes pasta all wholemeal. My last reading in October was 44. I do test quite often I found a too quick rise for breakfast so had to change that and just the occasional too high above 8.5. Yesterday was no meds day and so far ok wake up to 5.3, 2 hrs after lunch and dinner was 6.6, it did peak after an hour though to just above 8.5, I'm thinking that could be improved with some diet changes again?? I'm really pleased with the weight loss I've not been 10stone since I was in my teens!!! I really don't want to put it back on, I am determined not to. I have also suffered with pain in my right side for nearly 2 years so far nothing has shown up but I am going to ask for another scan I can't help thinking maybe it's liver. Pancreas related??? Thanks for your support xxx

That's the correct approach if you are getting unusual numbers when you test, there are quite a few conditions that make your blood glucose levels to vary. And a scan would be one of them tests if you are having pains.
Keep us informed on how your appointment goes.

They are sending me for a CT scan so we'll see what that shows.. least they are investigating x
