First Kink.

Guessing the fact the adhesive lifted it gave the cannula chance to come out, then when you have pushed/layed on the site it has kinked

This is why I stick to multiple injections each day.Guy I work with has high sugars quite a bit due to bent needles.Wouldn't be comfortable either sleeping with a pump.

Each to their own I guess, in general the pump gives a much tighter control than MDI

@buckmr2 Your preference of MDI is a personal view of yours and doesn't offer anything to this thread. Likewise, how comfortable sleeping with an insulin pump is, does not address @Type1Lad's query in any way.

@Type1Lad, are you aware of stainless steel cannulas? You can always check whether these are available for your model of pump, and whether or not your GP would be happy to prescribe them. That is, if kinking cannulas becomes a consistent issue for you providing that you're following the application instructions thoroughly.

Having used both cannulas for over 10 months now I can say only from a personal experience that this hadn't happened to me, so wouldn't consider this to be an issue as such, however it's good you've picked up on it and knew what to do straight away @Type1Lad

@buckmr2 Compare to MDI I much prefer using a pump, tighter control, less anxious from injecting, close communication with nurse and easy to adjust, sleeping with a pump is no issues either it doesn't get in the way, it's fair to say that unless you've tried both then you can't judge it.

I think I had my first bent cannula in 2011 which was 1 year after starting the Combo pump. It happened through me inserting a Flexlink cannula in my upper arm and it not firing in correctly. It weirdly didn't cause the pump to sound the occlusion alarm but I realised that something was wrong with bg testing and after delivering a really large correction and a big TBR which didn't do much, I then resorted to using my pen to get my bg down and replaced the set when I could. On removing it, the cannula was bent at a right angle so no wonder that it wasn't working as it should. I thanked my lucky stars that I could bg test and resort to using my pen.
The second cannula failure came in 2015 when I was demonstrating to a relative how the spring mechanism worked on the Inset II set with my Vibe. I foolishly kept pulling the spring back and releasing it to demonstrate how the set worked. When I fired it in to my tummy, I did a bolus for breakfast and found out 2hrs later that bg was going up and up and again, no correction or TBR was working that well so used my pen. On taking the set out, it had a tiny kink at the end of the cannula.

Not had a Kinked canular yet though out of habit i do check them when i remove them. 99.9 are perfect but I've had 1 with a very very slight bend so slight it didnt affect delivery.

As mentioned maybe your canular became dislodged and kinked then? If so then you've learnt a lesson and passed it on to others.

And in answering to the other remark made by someone else regarding sleeping with a pump, no problem at all, i put mine in a spiebelt but occasionally i just clip it to the waist band of my under wear usually on the opposite side to which i lay but also have no problem laying on the pump itself.

Bad luck @Type1Lad - hope you're feeling fine and dandy again.

I had something going on yesterday - was inexplicably in the mid teens after WEEKS of no double figures!

Changed my cannula (which I'd only put in a little while before my rise in blood sugar), no obvious issue with it physically, and the replacement one was then absolutely fine.

Notched it up as 'one of those things', although I was temporarily cross that I'd gone waaaaay higher than I'm comfortable with.

This is the second time this has happened to me - the first time was the day after I started on the pump - so it's not something that causes anxiety in me as a pumper.

Hope you're feeling better now? I agree with other posters that it was most likely the tape coming loose that caused a kink. A kink at insertion should have caused your pump to alarm. If the tape situation happens again you can always use a strip of Mefix tape to keep it down until you are ready for your next change
