Hello all,

After 20 months of trying, I found out this morning I am pregnant. Ironically it is also 17 years to the day that I was diagnosed with T1DM!

I have been feeling nauseous and tired for the last few days on and off, but the main thing I have noticed is raised blood sugars. I thought initally I might have been getting ill, but the test this morning has given me the answer.

I was wondering if other ladies have had this problem early on, and what percentage increases you had to do. I'm currently waiting for my DSN and GP to call me back later today.

I thought I'd be so excited to finally be pregnant, but honestly, I'm terrified. I have always lived by "you rule the diabetes, it does not rule you." But now all I can think about it how it could cause problems, and it's going to be ruling my life...for the next 8 months at least if everything continues as it is.

Just to add to the drama and the irony...I'm a medical professional, so having a non-stressful/semi-relaxing time during the pregnancy isn't really going to happen. Add diabetes to the mix = more terrified.

If anyone has any words of wisdom, tips, advice etc I would really appreciate it.

Thank you for reading my mini novel above x

bless you and many congratulations! I am the proud diabetic mum of 2 of the best boys in the world. ...now 18 and 12!
all I can say is. ...enjoy it! yes, be careful, test before meals and bed and don't beat yourself up!
bloods do go up, especially at first, but you can't do better than your best.
enjoy your time being pregnant and the joys to come. xx

Congratulations Hun! I can't speak from experience as I haven't gone though pregnancy myself just yet, but everyone on here is so supportive,

from what I have read a lot of the ladies on here experience higher readings at first and need to adjust.

I can imagine it is a worrying time, I'm sure I will myself but really do try to relax and just take things in your stride you don't want to stress yourself or your baby out :-)

Do you eat low carb? A lot of people on here do and I have started to myself and it's great for avoiding those nasty spikes after meals, but just test test test and adjust insulin when you need to :-) good luck xx

Thank you :-)
My DSN booked me into the ante-natal clinic at the hospital today and I met with the entire team who were really supprtive. In fact, where I thought my control hasn't been good enough, they were really pleased and even told me I'm testing my sugars too much (I never thought I would hear that)! And I actually felt happier and calmer after that. With a steady HbA1c of 49 they said I'm in a really good place, and a few days running high are ok, it is the long term highs and /or poor pre-pregnancy control that can have the highest impact.

I am very lucky to have a fantastic diabetes, and now obstetrics team where I live. And I hope with all my heart everything will be ok, and we have a healthy and happy baby.

xxx

For any ladies who find themselves in the same situation as me, hyperglycaemia (as well as hypoglycaemia) can occur in early pregnancy. Everyone is slightly different and I have been told patterns may change from week to week. The key thing is to get seen in a specialist ante-natal clinic as soon as that stick shows a positive result. The doctors, midwives, specialist nurses, dieticians, health care assistants, sonographers etc are there to help. Support is there, so don't be afraid to ask for it xxx
