I know it's tempting when you first get a meter, but the essential thing to remember is you need to be organised with it.
Random testing is a waste of strips. None of us can tell you if your first reading was high or normal as there is nothing to compare it with.
Test immediately before you eat.
Test again 2 hours after first bite.
Look at the difference between before and after.
Keep this difference under 2mmol/l and preferably a lot less.
More than 2mmol/l and there were too many carbs in that meal which need reducing in portion size or eliminating.
Keep a detailed food diary, including portion sizes.
Record your levels alongside.
Look for patterns.
