Hi was diagnosed October 16 with

hba1c. 57
cholesterol 4.7.

At this point refused medication as wanted to try LCHF

Just got new test results after starting the diet and made up

hba1c 39 normal

but cholesterol gone up to 5.1 and doctor wants to see me :(

Asked for breakdown of this result

Good cholesterol 0.8
Bad cholesterol. 2.6

How do I reduce this the natural way as don't want statins ?

Do the yoghurt drinks and benecol spread work ?

Please can you advise please

No help on those yog drinks

However awesome work on your control in a short time.

If you can get to 39 you can sort out your cholesterol

I've had same problem hb1ac going the right way but cholesterol raised I've bought some spread and yoghurts going to try it, also cut back on hard cheese/cream and fatty meat!? Increase good fats fish/nuts/avacoda? Xx

Total cholesterol is the sum of the HDL (good) and LDL (bad) plus 46% of your triglycerides. As your good and bad total only 3.4 your trigs must be fairly high. It would help if you knew exactly what they are. It is the trigs that are the real baddies. Cutting right back on carbs will raise your HDL (good), which is very low at the moment.. Eat plenty of oily fish. Ask your doctor for a print out so you can see all the results before you make a decision on statins. There is a chart here that may explain things

Well done on the HbA1c - that is excellent. :)

Read up on cholesterol. It is essential to stay alive.
There are lots of threads on the forum discussing it.

Cholesterol of 5.1 is not that bad. What matters is the composition. I always think, if the yogurts actually did much good, wouldn't they be on prescription?

My cholesterol will go up if I eat a lot of saturated fat and\ or dairy ( which is saturated fat ). I get most of my fats from avocado, olive oil, olives, nuts and seeds. Fatty fish like salmon and tuna. I do eat dark chicken, but not the skins. I eat lean beef and lamb as well but I cut all visible fat. I rarely eat bacon but I do eat eggs. Butter in small amounts. No cheese.

I agree it is the ratios of good cholesterol to bad cholesterol that is more important. If those ratios are good it can be heart protective.

The problem @Burnetty has is her HDL is unhealthily low and her ratios are bad. If you type her results in here, it will become obvious. (use the mmol/l calc)

She needs to increase the HDL by seriously reducing carbs and eating plenty of Omega 3 from fish oils and other things.

Thanks. I have no idea what your numbers mean so thanks for that. I didn't mean to imply hers were good as I had no clue but I still believe ratios are important so yes, she needs to bring HDL up.

Sorry Kristin, I wasn't referring to your post in particular, just trying to bring everyone's attention to the situation. :)
