First test of the day

I'm looking for a bit of advice here........

My fasting test - about 8.30am is usually around 7.2 - 7.4. I found that cereal was causing my levels to rise so I have now changed to having a slice of Burgen toast for breakfast - that takes the level up to about 9.5 after an hour and it drops slowly, however by lunchtime - say 1pm, my level has dropped to 5.8 or so. I can't face eggs etc for breakfast so it has to be an easy option!

I have read about the "dawn phenomenon" and wonder if that's what's causing my fasting level to be higher. Should I be eating something before I go to bed and if so - what!

I am trying to keep my carbs as low as possible, but strangely a small portion of fish and chips, which I ate to see what happened, only pushed my level up to 8.8 after an hour.

Thanks so much for all your help here - makes such a difference!

Hi, I am new here so by no means an expert but just wanted to say my blood sugar is exactly the same and I had fish and chips last night and my reading was 8.9. Sorry that is of no help but just pleased it is not only me that has weird morning readings :)

The fish and chips have a lot of fat in them which delays carb digestion. Perhaps testing at 2-3 hours would have revealed higher blood sugars.

I knew it was too good to be true, but they were very nice. My first naughtiness though and I won't be doing it again for a long long time.

This is something you will have to work out for yourself. Your total blood volume only contains around 5g glucose at any one time so your liver only has to be slightly overractive to double your BG without you actually eating anything. Tinkering with various evening snacks may help. Curiously sometimes eating more carbs at the right time may cause lower BG, the insulin required to digest them may shut down the liver's glucose production.
