Hi all,

I've caught a bug, I'm pretty sure a cold as we visited a friend with a 5 year old with a snotty nose on Saturday... And on Monday I started coming down with it... Anyway, I'm a bit worried as totally freaked myself out reading about illness and diabetes on-line - I have a ketone meter and its currently showing 0.5 - which I believe is fine?

My question is whether there's anything in particular I need to be doing - other than test for ketones?

I'm now on the third day of a fever (39 degrees) with *major* sore throat and headache and no signs of improvement... The little one seemed perfectly fine apart from a runny nose! :-/

Keep calm and carry on testing :D
Seriously, don't worry about the ketones unless you BG's are running high. Personally I find a cold makes little difference to my BG's but some find they do go higher as the body fights off infection .m
If they do go high, there are the Sick Day Rules that I'm sure @noblehead or someone else will post up.

I forget what they are cos I've never had to use them  Touch wood !

I thought you would have had all of these in your favourite list :)

This set of workbooks are worth reading and practising working examples of carbs and doses and corrections. Don't change dose without nurse approval

A workbook with USA numbers and math rules, but it has a good trouble shoot at the end

Ketones at 0.5 are nothing to worry about, much like Signy a mild cold does little to my bg levels as where a bad one can make them rise into double figures, so much depends on the severity of the cold.

Just keep monitoring your bg levels and take on board the DAFNE Sick Day Rules, there a good chart in the following that explains what action you should take when unwell:

Thank you... Interesting both you & @Heathenlass don't notice a difference - I'm using twice as much insulin as normal, and eating half the number of carbs I'd eat, and still in double figures. I keep on taking more insulin, eating less food, and thinking 'I'm going to have overdone it now and hypo' - but no - still much higher than usual... This evening I had 9 units for a 20g carb bowl of soup - normally I'd have 2 units for that - 3hrs later and I'm 12.6 :-(

So now I'm fevering, feeling like death, and hungry cos I'm scared to eat anything :-(

As I say, it depends on the severity of the cold Artemis, it's sounds like you have a stinker of a cold. Just follow the DAFNE Sick Day Rules whereby you increase your insulin by 10%/20% of your TDD.

Hope your feeling better tomorrow.

After many years of being type1,I have keep records on a hard drive of what I done with illness and my insulin corrections.I find this invaluable so that I can stabilise myBS early rather than later an yes keep testing.
