First time I've made note of HbA1c

Hi,
I had some blood taken last week and rang the surgery yesterday for the results. It's the first time, since being on this forum, that I've taken an interest in the results. It seemed pointless before as I had no help or advice so didn't see the point in just getting blood tests done every now and then.
HbA1c was 47 which I understand is fine. I'm on 500 metformin a day.
The doctor doesn't want to see me as he said I'm being effectively treated.
Anyone got any opinions?
Is the doc right and I'm fine?
I've made an appointment to see the DN on Friday anyway so if anyone knows of what questions I should ask, please let me know.

how can you have upset someone with what you have said??? i have no idea of an answer to your question but cooooome backkk :)

Hi Lasermum I still work in the old system used for HbA1c which is called DCCT-% and your number of 47 works out at 6.5% in the old system which is pretty good. If I were in your position I would ask my diabetes nurse if I could increase my Metformin up to two 500mg tablets a day (assuming you are just taking one a day) and see if that helps to bring the Hba1c down a little more, but thats just me.

Whilst 47 (6.5%) is well within the guidelines for a T2 the lower you can get it the better, but it is of course a personal matter and you may be fine with your HbA1c at that level.

So an Hba1c of 47 is good so you must have been doing something right and that = congratulations

ps. I used to be a Mirrorman when was in my 20's :D

The fact that you haven't had many replies could be down to various things. Many people look at the forum during the day or are out in the evening, I visit the forum every day but it tends to be first thing in the morning.

Your HbA1c is a very personal thing, it depends on how near to non-diabetic you want to get it by low carbing and taking meds.

Yours converted is 6.5% which although your doctor thinks is fine, is higher than an non-diabetic and the higher it is the more likely you are to have complications like neuropathy and retinopathy.

Many of the old timers on the forum still work on the % system and don't quite get the new system and can't see immediately what the new figures mean (I had to use the converter on the main page).

Keep an eye on your HbA1c and make sure it isn't heading upwards, you can ask the nurse what your previous figures were and get a printout for future reference.

My last HbA1c was 5.4% or 36 mmol/mol but I achieve that by low carbing and taking quite a lot of meds. This is my choice to do this and may not be appropriate for you.
