Hi ladies,

I am a T1 8wks +1, other than a small blip of high BSLs, I have mainly been having a lot of hypos and generally find myself eating up to my insulin a lot. Also, I have had pretty bad nausea so have definitely been craving salty greasy foods that I haven't eaten in years!

I have noticed that I seem to have gained quite a bit of weight already!! Did this happen to anyone else? I am worried that by the end, I will be huge if it carries on like this!

Hi,
I cannot answer your post but will bump it up for replies.
Hope everything goes well for you.
Take care.

What's your insulin regime @courtenayjane ? It could be that at this stage in pregnancy your insulin may need reducing a little. Hypos are normal early in pregnancy, so make sure you keep plenty of hypos treatments close by! I remember whole mornings eating sweets to keep my sugar up! Watch out for night time hypos too, even if you don't normally have them.

I ate extra carbs to help the nausea too. I also found eating frequently kept the nausea at bay. I think that's quite normal :) I wouldn't worry about the weight gain unless you're eating really, really badly and gaining vast amounts of weight. I found I put on quite a lot of weight in the first trimester and a reasonable amount in the second, but then my weight gain slowed. I don't have the exact figures to hand but I think I put on something like 23lbs by week 25.

Concentrate on keeping your sugars in range, eating healthily as much as you can, and looking after yourself. What you're describing isn't unusual and I wouldn't worry unless it becomes extreme.

Congratulations on your pregnancy :)

P.S - most of my pregnancy weight dropped over pretty quickly after giving birth with no effort at all from me (I'm breastfeeding) :)

Thanks. I am on levemir and humalog. I have dropped my background insulin already but maybe I need to go further. I have had over 50 hypos in the last month! It seems such a delicate balance - sick of eating but at the same time, afraid to take the risk of doing less insulin and ending up high.

I am still waiting to get excited... I think the fear of getting it wrong is too strong at the moment!

Thank you for your kind words!

My background Insulin has gone from 24 to 9 in the morning and 50 to 27 in the evening but all with the guidance of my antenatal diabetic team. (thats from week 6 to week 17) So dont be afraid to reduce it. Also my appetite has gone done now I am on less insulin. Weight gain is a worry for me from week 12 to week 17 I have put on 3lbs eck! X

I had a quick look at my weight chart for you @courtenayjane I put on approx 8lbs in the first couple of months. My consultant said that was normal for my starting weight (I have a normal BMI). I noticed my weight gain was different than normal and was clearly due to pregnancy. This is obviously not the weight of the baby early on, it's your body setting down fat to maintain the pregnancy and for breastfeeding in the future, etc.

My weight gain pattern was a jump early on, steady gain in the middle, and a jump at the end (as baby put on weight).

As long as you're eating well and not gorging on rubbish 24/7 you'll be fine :)
