Flash glucose sensing available on NHS (Libre)

Evening All

With the recent news that devices such as the Freestyle Libre’ from Abbott,

subject to local health authority approval.

I live in an area which has stated that they will not be supporting the product.

I am interested in which authorities have embraced this, and Which are not.

Also if you have had success following initial refusal, so we can adopt best practices etc.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I wish I could remember where I saw this but there seems to be one CCG in Wales where you can get the Libre on prescription. NHS Wales on the other hand is financially having problems, so who know. If you have a Facebook account it's worth checking out "Abbott Freestyle Libre users", a useful FB page.

Apart from that, it looks like a unanimous "NO" from all CCGs. It's because of financial constraints that I don't see that position changing although I hope I'm wrong.

@callumsfather - it's all a bit of a mess.

The simple answer is that very few areas are prescribing - there seems to be one in Yorkshire, and most CCGs in England are awaiting a guidance paper, but it looks as though they are going to be fairly tough on provision.

In Wales, NHS Wales appears to have decided to apply the NG17 NICE Guidelines for CGM to the provision of Flash monitoring. Which is a disaster.

So, to put it into a phrase, I think you'd find either FUBAR or SNAFU would both describe the situation very well...

The CCG's are denying type 2's the most basic of testing equipment. My own GP openly confessed to me that they are actively trying to reduce standard testing equipment for type 1's. The cold hard fact is that the NHS has got no money. It is very cynical of Abbott to whip up the storm that they have when surely if a buffoon like me can work out that the NHS can not fund Libre, a multi national pharma company must have worked it out ages ago
