Flavoured water is ok as it doesn't have the dreaded aspartame. I like to make my own flavoured water with slices of cucumber or fruit without the added chemicals, just fruit or veg or both and water.

There are so many types of flavoured water so if you say which one you are going to try then someone will advise you of their experience with it or as to why it may not be suitable.

What's valid research? I know that I got side effects from diet drinks with aspartame in. When n=1 that's all the research I need. I do think you need to drink a lot of diet drinks before you get any bad side effects though ( unfortunately I did, so it's good to warn others) I don't think the occasional diet drink does any harm to most people.
I occasionally drink flavoured water and diet drinks - just look at the nutritional and other info on the bottle/can to see whether you want to drink it or not
