Hi

I have been trying to get started on the cure and have been taking flaxoil for two weeks. I was ok for the first week and managed 3 sometimes four tablespoons a day. This week I have only managed 2 tablespoons and feel quite sick for quite a time after taking it. Has anyone else experienced nausea through taking flaxseed oil and did you carry on taking it? Any help would be appreciated as I don't really want to give in.

Steve what brand of flaxseed oil are you taking? I am taking Holland and Barrats and it is horrible. I understand that stonemills is supposedly better - I guess you can only buy over internet.

Does anyone know whether or not you can buy hemp oil from a shop or do you have to go via internet?

I don't trust the internet for shopping.

What you need to do for the full details is to google "trans fats" and "diabetes" as the thread here has mysteriously been removed. It is all out there somewhere on the www ... but I'll attempt a quick summary:

It is well dospamented that trans fats cause all sorts of health problems, including type 2. Basically trans fats create defective and insulin resistant body cells. Taking larger amounts of omega 3 oils is thought to provide the body with plenty of good oils to reverse the problem.

It was suggested that we take a daily dose of 45ml - 60ml flaxseed (linseed) oil for 6 weeks, then take 15ml flaxseed, 10ml hemp oil, 5ml fish oils for the next year or two, while fanatically avoiding all transfats. Basically you have to cook with extra virgin olive oil, palm oil, the above oils, butter or lard, and avoid margerine and vegetable oils. This means no processed foods, and a lot of good old fashionned home cooking!

I make a salad dressing with my flaxseed oil. Two parts oil to one part cider vinegar, with honey and wholeseed mustard to taste. It is very tasty like this, and even makes "rabbit food" tolerable to me! I don't mind the taste of flaxseed oil - it is hemp oil which I find :x!
 
Has anyone tried flaxseed in capsule form? If so do you know what is the equivalent dose to a liquid measure. I've just looked in Holland & Barrett and they have capsules in 500mg, 1000mg and 1200mg forms. I asked the assistant in H&B who gave me a look like I had just asked him for directions to Mars.
 
I remember somewhere on the "cure" thread asking that question.I think it was something like 6-8 caps a day but I can't remember the size of caps!

I am still unsure about the large amounts of flaxseed oil that has been recommended in the cure. Most places seem to say 1 or 2 tablespoons a day. I know when I e-mailed carefix he very kindly replied by saying that flaxoil is a food not medicine but I know that if you ate large amounts of beef that would not be good for you therefore makes me wonder if the same would apply to large amounts of flaxoil. In earlier posting I referred to how for the first week I was ok taking the flaxoil but thereafter it made me feel sick. I am now wondering if the oil had gone off as I didn't store it in the fridge. My thinking is based on reading the following from en.wikipedia.org

"Flax seed oil is very easily oxidized, which means that contact with oxygen will gradually break down the oil and can cause it to become rancid and give off an unpleasant smell."[1]

"It shouldn't smell funky ... Flax has a nutty flavor and smell. It should smell good... flaxseed oil, which must be refrigerated, has a relatively short shelf life of a few weeks. If the oil smells rancid, toss it. Flax seed oil should only be used cold - it can't be heated like olive oil."[2]

Flax seed oil has anti-oxidant nutritional properties, which are considered to be anti-carcinogenic. However, unless it is processed and stored with care, and consumed fresh, it is prone to readily turn rancid. Rancid oils contribute to the formation of free radicals and are carcinogenic.[3][4][5]

"Raw flaxseeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, which are converted in the body to thiocynanates (also breakdown products of glucosinolates in cruciferous vegetables). Thiocyanates can inhibit the uptake of iodine by the thyroid, but this is not generally a problem when iodine is plentiful in the food supply. However, under conditions of chronic low iodine intake, large amounts of raw flaxseeds could contribute the goiter. Cooking flaxseeds destroys the cyanogenic glycosides."[6]"

In reply to Dennis - I have estimated that you would need about 14 capsules a day to equal 4 tablespoons of oil. I too asked the staff at HB and they couldn't answer the question so I looked on various web sites and worked it out from there.

I have read carefix's the cure threads and I did take a copy to file. I have also read some of the articles he mentions. It does seem beneficial to take these oils but I am still unsure about the dosage.

Does anyone know where you can buy palatable hempoil other than the internet? I know someone mentioned Stonemills is ok but I guess that is not available in shops.

Val you can buy good hemp oil from Tesco's or Sainsbury's.Today it was just over £3 a bottle.I take 2 big tablespoons of hemp and flax oils in some yoghurt with some cinnamon added.I've said this a good few times now so the whole world must know.:DHope that helps.
 
Bought flaxseed caps today,they were on sale 180 for £6.99.Took one at dinner time,will take one with each meal then ,if stomach tolerates that will try 2 a meal.
 
They are big capsules,each holding 1gm of flaxseed oil.By the size of them I would guess no more than 5ml per cap.It says you can take 6 a day which would therefore be 30mls .

1 gram*1/0.93=1.08mls
1 gram*1/0.94=1.06mls
So 1 gram of flax oil will be between 1.06 and 1.08 mls.
You would need to take 30 capsules a day to get the recommended dose of
30mls.
