Flipping restless legs

Oh why oh why just feels like my little legs have run and itched and burned up all night, I just never get a decent nights kip anymore, come to great every twist an turn of my torso as well aches and groans. Is this payback for all them uncontrolled years gone by, nowadays sitting pretty with an HbA1c of 5.9 or 41 in new money !!!

  • Maintain good sleep hygiene, having regular bed times and rising times
  • Ensure that you achieve at least 7 hours of sleep per night
  • Avoid being sleep-deprived, as this can exacerbate RLS and PLMD
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol, nicotine and heavy meals before retiring to bed
  • Perform moderate physical activity during the day (such as brisk walking)
  • Avoid excessive physical exercise before bed-time, as this tends to make RLS and PLMD worse
Just some suggestions. :) Your issues could be T2 related, but don't take that as fact.

Hi Mike D the only thing I don't really do is get 7 hrs kip haven't for yrs I just don't kip well, I'm on a pump so I that's why I'm well controlled, do have servere neuropathy well it's servere for me, legs and arms, hands are always cold especially over last couple of yrs

:( No no not the docs again I know I've already got a good fair share of problems but I really feel we'll be on first name terms soon, when you say perhaps MS couldn't it just be a lack of something in my diet or just a Type 1 complication underlying

Oh sheesh I am SO sorry :(

I should have typed "MB" as an abbreviation for your screen name, NOT "MS". Sorry about that !!!!! Don't want you to panic mate :)

I know people down here that take medicines for it, but beyond that, I'm out of my depth.

Apologies again

Mike

Hi @masonbason63,

Did you start any new medication when this first started to affect you? Do you have an iron deficiency?

This article explains some of the possible reasons.

  • Lack of iron (iron deficiency) - which can cause anaemia. If this is the cause, then the symptoms of RLS usually go if you take iron tablets.
  • As a side-effect of some medicines. For example, it occurs in some people who take: antidepressants, antipsychotics, dopamine antagonists, antihistamines, calcium-channel blockers, phenytoin, or steroids.
  • As a symptom of some other conditions - for example, kidney failure, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and underactive thyroid

There are other posters who have this condition and two of the popular home remedies seems to be a glass of tonic water or adding a pinch of salt to some water. Hopefully you will get more replies as you are not alone.

Hi, I haven't started any new meds in the last 18 months and I don't think we'll it wasn't mentioned at the clinic last week that I've an iron deficiency. On the meds side I am on antidepressants and anti physcotic drugs and the icing on the cake I have diabetes type 1 and kidney problems so maybe Lady Luck is not smiling on me as much as she could :-)

I have Resless Leg Syndrome too. Trouble is at times in the past I have experienced restless arms at the same time. It is horrible. I was put on Tegretol (Carbamazepam) which, I am lead to believe is also prescribed for some patients with Parkinsons.

I saw a Neurological Consultant a while ago who confirmed it is a neurological chronic illness, cause unknown, but probably inherited. I had been sleeping very badly a short while ago, almost sleep deprivation, and the RLS came on big time. You have my sympathy.

Hello, I have had RLS for years. I have been on medication for about 4 to 5 years now. I am prescribed Ropinirole and it has helped tremendously, I wouldn't be without it. I also get it more mildly in my arms too. I take 2 tablets before bed and 1 1/2 tablets late afternoon, as it got so bad, I couldn't sit down.
Please go to your GP as there is help out there and don't suffer with this horrible condition. Blood tests will need to be taken first to see if you are low in iron and then possibly tablets given. There are self help home remedies on the Internet, but nothing worked for me. It's more common in females and also related to diabetes too.

Good luck and all the best RRB

Everyone who has this condition has my sympathy too. I take Ropinirole and this is another Parkinsons medication, but I was told by my GP that RLS doesn't mean we will get Parkinsons. I hope you are feeling a little better now as sleep deprivation is a killer, just horrible.

Take care RRB

It all sounds good in black and white MIke, but if your legs are manic every time you rest, sit down or go to bed, you are not going to get hardly any sleep at all, it's just awful, because you're crying out for it to stop :arghh: :stop: Thank goodness for medication :joyful:

Interesting that it may also be related to Diabetes. I only mention that because I was diagnosed with RLS years before T1. Maybe my body 'knew'!

Yes, sleep deprivation is truly awful. I thought I was going mad. I could not make sense of anything. Back to RLS - I too have heard that a lack of iron may be a cause. I had taken supplements when I used to have really bad attacks and it seemed to help at that time.

I'm on Carbamazapen 240 mg a day I was put on this for my neuropathy and it also helped my depression but its only helped a bit for my neuropathy but has made life easier

Yep, agreed RRB :)

It was from an internet site I searched :)

Hi @masonbason63 , I have it too and yes it's truly horrible isn't it, I wouldn't wish it on anybody
Strangely I was talking to my son about it just an hour ago and he told me that he had just been told that it's much more common in people with coeliacs disease - 31% compared with 4% of non coeliacs.
As @Robinredbreast mentioned, there is some medication available which you can take if it doesn't clash with other meds you might be on, so a visit to your GP could be very worthwhile. I hope you get some relief.
