Flu and TDD

I had flu this week, which was horrid but survivable. My blood sugar went up, and I kept up all my basal doses, and that was fine. But whenever I ate, I kept on having to bolus more than usual to get my BG down again. I usually bolus 6 units a day; three days this week it was 9 units. Is this normal? This is the first time I’ve been sick since Dx. (I changed my Novorapid cartridge, just in case.)

Poor you, better soon, sleep-sleep-sleep, drink-drink-drink. As someone very wise once told me ;)

Hi Lucy. Sorry you've been ill. Yes, the increased insulin requirement is perfectly normal - and can take several days to normalise once you're feeling better. The first time I was ill after starting insulin, I was completely shocked at my spikes after eating and the amount of insulin I needed. I just thought the honeymoon was ending - and quite frankly that the world might be ending LOL. It actually depressed me because I realised how serious a condition LADA is and I felt very vulnerable.

When I'm ill, I generally raise my basal dose a little to try to keep the baseline down - I find it helps reduce the after food spikes and keeps the bolus requirements in check.

Hope you're feeling better and getting back to normal!

Hi Lucy
really sorry to hear you have been feeling poorly. :(
I can see you have had good advice on adjusting doses when you are not feeling well -- I find it is an early warning system for me as well -- if my blood sugars are higher than normal for no apparent reason my first suspicion is often -- AHA !! I am coming down with something !

hope you are feeling better soon :)
