Hi everyone,

I am the mother of s 10 yr old boy that is s T1D. His Endo recommends getting a flu shot(we are newly diagnosed) my son has always been healthy and I don't think in his life he has every actually gotten the flu ? If he ever has it was a light case. Any opinions? I am not opposed but I am not sure if he really needs it? Dr explained that he now has a compromised immune system and that I light case could turn severe. Any thoughts ? Thanks

As diabetics we are more suseptible and flu especially can make you really poorly, flu can turn really nasty and as your son is diabetic and in school & therefore at higher risk it would be better to be safe than sorry, but it's down to personal choice at the end of the day

Any thoughts or suggestions on this . We are newly diagnosed . I am the mother of a 10 yr old T1 little boy :) I am not opposed to doing the shot his Endo recommended it . He is a very healthy boy . I am having a hard time understanding the benefits ?? Help :) thank you all in advance
The flu jab is meant to prevent or at least minimise the effects of the illness in those less able to fight infection. As Diabetics we at higher risk of not only getting flu but with a weakened immune system less able to fight infection. Personally I still get a horrendous cold which makes me suffer but it's nothing compared to the flu virus, a lot of people have it, a lot of people don't and the jab isn't 100% but if he did get flu iit would not be as severe. At the end of the day it's down to personal choice

Hello definitely go for it.....I did in September....have just come out of hospital after getting flu. If I had not had the shot I'd have been by far worse, and I was pretty bad. Your choice but I'd say yes.....

Yup - get the jab. I had my flu jab a few weeks ago. I had been concerned about it due to recent kidney transplant, but I got a lot of assurances. it's not an injection containing live virus these days (or at least mine wasn't), so way less risk of getting ill from it. I am not exactly keen to have such jabs, but we are more at risk, and so - yeah. jab jab jab.

Thank you every one ! Do any of you work any immune system boosting practices?

@Agloy, when you are ill with type 1 diabetes it makes the condition extremely difficult to control, that is why they encourage people with diabetes to take up the offer of the flu jab as a preventative measure.

I've only once had flu and that was several years ago and my bg went haywire, I was so ill I could hardly lift my head off the pillow, therefore I always get the jab each year to reduce the chances of flu ever occurring again.
