I have a little experience with Phlebitis (sic.), as a close relative of mine suffered from it many years ago. Phlebitis is an inflammation of veins, and if those inflamed veins are superficial then it is a minor condition (although painful). However, if deep veins are affected then there is a risk of thrombosis - and that can be very serious (even fatal). Have a look at this article on Phlebitis, and pay particular notice to the "When to Seek Medical Care" section. If your husband has any of those symptoms, don't hang around waiting for a doctors appointment go straight to a hospital.

Assuming that it is peripheral, then the general advice is to take an OTC anti-inflammatory (aspirin or ibuprofen) and exercise as much as possible. Compression stockings (the sort you get for air travel) might help relieve the pain.

Is it phlebitis or cellulitis? In cellulitis the skin itself becomes infected taking on a red ,orange peel look.It also weeps.

Just an up date on Kevin we went to the Dr this morning he has flubitus and an infection and has been given a strong dose of anti-biotics and the Dr said if it gets any worse he will send him to hospital and to go back if his breathing gets any worse thankyou for your support
