Hi.

I am due to fly soon with just hand luggage, how do you get round the security procedures carrying on insulin and needles? I have been told I have to pay for a letter.
Is this the case with everyone else? Any help would be great. Thanks xx

You shouldnt need to pay for a letter. Contact your specialist nurse and (s)he should be able to sort one out for you.
That said I have never yet been asked for mine.

All I do is carry all my supplies in a small toiletry bag and pull that out and just tell security that it contains sharps as I am diabetic. They usually just nod and get on with it. I have been asked to place the pens and refills in the clear bacg with liquids on 2 occasions out of many.

The only other thing I do is carry a recent repeat prescription slip as well. It just gives them a little more proof that you should be carrying all that stuff. Again I have never yet been asked for it.

Thanks you so much Andy. I've been so worried. My specialist nurse is based at my GP surgery who has said I needed to pay. I had been informed about using the prescription but now I know it works I'm a lot happier.

Thanks again x

Also you shouldn't put insulin in the hold even if you had bags in there, it can freeze which makes it useless.

Yeah I would say them informing you that you need to pay for that letter is them just spouting the typical response from a Dr surgery.

All the letter I have from my specilist at the hospital says is that I am T1 and under no circumstances should I be separated from my supplies. The arguament I have pre-prepared (though unused) is that if they insist on taking my supplies away then they are accepting full reponsibility for my medical treatment. Given this can they please supply their medical credentials. But as I said, never used that and not needed the letters either.

+1 on what Engineer says. Also the general advice is to take twice as much as you think you will need. I had a hotel fridge go nuts on me on one business trip and freeze half my insulin. Luckily I had twice what I needed to was fine until I got back.

Hope you have a good trip.

I took my insulin in a Frio bag. I was away for 4 weeks and everything was fine. I had a doctor's letter (and did pay for it) but didn't have to show it ever.

Hello I've just come back from Spain. I just put my pens in a clear bag as it's a liquid. My needles stayed in my hand luggage. In all the years I've been diabetic I've always done this. Not once have I taken a letter with me and not once have I been asked.

Have a good trip
