Just seeking opinions. What is correct etiquette regarding following members?
I think it good manners to ask first.

What if someone is following you and you would prefer it if they didn't? (Not that I have this problem, just wondered).
Can you stop them?

I also cannot see any advantage in following a particular member. Do you get an alert if someone you follow posts?
Am I missing something?
 
I think it's a horrible, creepy feature that has no place on a forum like this. If we are interested in what a particular person posts - which is why I assume the feature is incorporated - then why can't we just click on their profile and just check their posts?

I feel the same way. I would also like to know if you can stop someone following you. If so how?
 
Do you get notified if someone is following you? I'm happy to follow or be followed - just to try it out.
 
as no one is following me I don't see that? Would you mind following me? you can then unfollow me - as I'm not that interesting!

Must admit I think there's two sides to the argument. Some might wish to follow previous advice from a poster in whom they have a degree of trust and keep up to speed with them to learn more even if it's in other threads,. Others for reasons best known to themselves. S'pose it's easier for guys, particularly from this far away but to me?. No big deal. But I DO see the other side as well.

Cheers @himtoo, I got the alert that you are following me, but I can't see a 'People Following you' in my profile, just people I am following (which is currently no one).

This is a feature to allow you to see content from who you want to see. If you don't want to be followed, you can press ignore. You will be notified if someone follows you and you can remove them, too. It's a handy feature that has been in place for 2 years-ish.

As a matter on interest; you say ".... you can remove them, too.... ". How would someone remove a follower?

It doesn't apply to me now, but at one point I had someone a bit weird, and clearly a troll, following me and I would have liked to have removed them from my DCUK online life. They now seem to have vapourised, but it would be good to understand the functionality.

Sometimes it's more important to know how to do something, rather than actually doing it, if that makes sense.
 
@Administrator I am listed as having 18 followers, yet only 15 show up on the list. Is it possible to remove the 3 unidentified ones? I think at least one of these has now been banned, but there's nothing to say who it is on the list. Also one of the ones listed has now been banned, so it would be useful to tidy this up too as he can't follow me anymore!

I don't have a problem with anyone following me, except mods, now that is disconcerting.
 
Not sure about it being creepy. I mean it could be flattering that someone thinks one is interesting enough to follow, but I don't see the purpose.

What about if someone is following you, and you don't want them too? Can you stop them? Again this is not an issue for me at the moment, but has been in the past.
 
I have two followers, neither of them post any more and only knew who one of them was anyway.

I don't follow anyone, cannot see the advantages for following or being followed. Honest, I'm not miserable just can't see the point !!
 
If you do follow someone do you get an alert when they post? If not why not?

I notice, also that in one's profile there is a facility to allow people following you to view your profile info. I guess that could be useful if you only wanted certain trusred members to see your personal info?
 
I would still like to know if people think it is ok to follow someone without asking first?
 
The advantage I can see in the follow/following facility is that I can set preferences to "received private messages only from people I follow" to filter out any dodgy messages from strangers. If anyone wants to follow me, it is no biggy as everything I post here is in the public domain anyway.
 
As Mike D, said, there are two sides, the worrying ones are the members, who often have just joined, so I have no idea of their gender, personality, type or views and when I go to view their profile, it says diabetes error, now that concerns me. I sometimes think it might be a banned member who has slipped through the net ( new profile) and is just taking the mickey?

Yes I would say it is. I only ever had one person ask me and that was appreciated by me but not absolutely necessary.

I have to say, I think it's just how t'internet works. In some ways, I'd rather know who is following me, rather than someone who appears to stalk one around the place. I'm sure some of us have felt, "what is it with x or y person - they post contrary or disagree with everything I write, on every post", and sort of know they're following us anyway.

At least if we're able to remove someone from our followers list, we have an additional tool in our armoury. It probably just means if we're sensitive about who follows us, we should have a peep at our followers list from time to time.

Most of the people who follow me I have interacted with at some stage - but not all. I agree the no avatar and no profile followers might feel a bit stalker-ish, if we have no option but to leave them on our lists.
