Anonymous question submitted:

Hi I have type 2 diabetes and waas diagnosed about 2 months ago. I was put on Metformin and this was increased to 2 500mg tablets after one month. Initially I was very nauseous and had a very upset stomach although these symptoms are not as bad now. I still have days where I feel sickly and bloated with stomach pains and wondered if there were any foods I could eat when taking the tablets to reduce these symptoms

Ask your DN for the Slow Release version of Metformin this might help with the side effects - ginger is good for nausea try it as a tea

I found cutting out fizzy drinks completely (even diet versions), cutting down on bread and spicy food made a difference, until I started to tolerate it better. I felt like I had IBS when I first started on the tablets :(

If you search my posts, I have made several on this subject.

If you're not already on the slow release version, as your GP for it. Cutting out fizzy drinks (especially before and after taking the meds) helped me. Eating low(ish) carb helped me, as does drinking *plenty* of water before, during and after taking the meds. During that lovely "getting used to it" period, I also ate as little as possible to function, but enough food to take the meds. Depending on how nauseated I was that day, it wasn't hard to eat less. I eat 1/2 my meal, drink water, take pills, drink more water, then finish my meal.

Additionally, I tried to eat as plainly as possible and also drank chamomile tea to ease the nausea.

All the above helped me, hope one or more of these tips helps you as well.
