When looking at the food labels am i correct in saying i should be looking at stuff that has low carbs not how much sugar for instance
a cereal bar
each bar contains carbs 15.2g
of which sugars 7.3g.

Hi,

Yes, that is correct. Sugars are carbs so the 7.3 is included in the 15.2. It is always the total carbs we need to look out for. The sugars part can indicate whether the food is likely to spike early - the higher the sugars, the earlier it may spike.

So if the carb count was 10g or under it would be ok, sorry about all the questions but me and the missus are trying to sort out a shopping list. cheers

If you want to use up 10g carbs on a cereal bar, then fine. Personally I prefer to use my carb allowance up on my meals.

it could be 20g and still ok, if 20g of carb fits your carb intake. it's all a balancing act of carbs per meal and per day. the main thing is that your BG is good.
I'm under 50g a day so for me I'd think twice about a 15g bar

How do you work out your carb allowance for the day, the thing that bothers me is everyone is talking about weight loss, i dont want to lose any weight .cheers

again it's a balance of what diet you can live with for the rest of your life.
it's generally a mix of carbs, protein, fats and meds.

this is very low carb and just as an example...you may chose not to go this low, bu
the fat/protein makes up for the loss of carb energy..you can put on weight with 50g of carb if you want to after you have your full quota of healthy fats with a bit more protein.
although it isn't shown, after maintain list, there is an increase list

I didn't either but I lost a stone and a half! I had to really cut my carbs to keep my glucose even near to the normal range so for me being thin is better than the long term consequences of a high blood glucose.

What the label is telling you is that there are 15.2 g carbs per bar but almost half of it is sugar :( which equals a lot of carbs and a lot of sugar.

When you cut your carbs you also cut your calories, so you need to replace those lost calories with extra fats and/or protein if you don't want to lose any weight. If you don't increase your fats/protein, you will lose weight. . How many grams of carbs you eat a day is entirely up to you. People on here range from hardly any (10g max) to 150g or more. The fewer you have, the better your blood glucose will be. You can use a meter to tell you what your personal tolerance is.
