Hello all.
Does anybody know where i can find a good list of the allowed foods and one of the carb values of basic low carb foods? Perhaps there is a website that sells them or somewhere i can print one off. My idea is to laminate it to stick on the fridge or something for an "at a glance" reference. Ive had a look aound and cant find what im looking for... I suppose i could look up all the values individually and type a list manually if all else fails.
Cheers

This is a site where you can look things up

http://www.carbohydrate-counter.org/

"allowed foods" are really up to you and what level of overall carbs you settle at in response to how your body reacts - Im vegetarian so the traditional "allowed" foods of meat etc dont feature in my diet, I also choose to limit carbs and cals so that overall fat level doesnt go too high (50% but of around 1000 cals)- others dont worry so much about sat fat and cals - different things suit different metabolisms and life styles

I also find that some foods that appear ok in terms of their carb content can send my sugars bonkers wereas others at exactly the same amount of carbs at face value cause no spikes so you really need to test test test to find out what works for you snd your body

Hello badcat.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. I had a look at the carb counter site and its great. I think it may be an American site and i believe they calculate carbs differently to us. I believe that is the states They list the net carbs and fibre separately and where they list just the carb value it is actually the net carb value. whereas here in the uk we list the combined carb count. Perhaps using an american site may result in us consuming more carbs than we think we are . Im reasonably new to this and i hope you will forgive me if i am wrong.
What im hoping to find is a list of foods that i can print out without having to go online.. All me old fashioned haha!
Kind regards
Nancy

Ive set up my own Excel spreadsheet and have the nutritional content for the foods I eat regularly ( carbs, cals, protein, fat and fibre) and the effect each has on my BMs( i.e the amount my BM's increased when Ive eaten the food).
I got the nutritional info from a British weight loss site ( i took out a 3 month subscription to use their tools and extract the info I wanted) - I find it a good investment of time and money

You're not kidding! I was chuffed with myself for getting my BG down from 11 to 6.4 this morning. Then I went into hospital today for a gynae biopsy as a day case and was told I wasn't going down to surgery until 4.30pm and because they had no beds and I'd have to wait in the waiting room for the next 5 hours!!! I almost exploded at the thought of sitting in a straight backed chair for 6 hours with nothing to eat or drink for a total of 9-10 hours so I decided to speak to the Ward Manager. She was surprised to find I am diabetic, anaphylactic and asthmatic as apparently there is nothing in my hospital notes to that effect despite the fact that I've been in hospital 3 times in 2 years, had two ultrasounds and two pre-ops where all that information was recorded, not once, not twice, but God knows how many times. I give up. :x

But I have to say, communication problems aside, the nurses and clinicians were wonderful and the chicken sandwich and packet of crisps I had after it was all over tasted delicious after all that fasting but God, did that two rounds of bread send my BG right back up to 11.2 again! I couldn't believe it - two rounds of bread and a packet of crisps and I didn't even eat the crusts!!!

Hello Badcat
I think i will do as you have done and make my own list. I have a British carb book to get me started. Do you remember the name of the site you joined?

weightlossresources is a UK based subscription based site (about a tenner a month)
my fitnesspal and spark people are free ones (american I think)

they all allow you to enter individual foods and build recipes with the nutritional info counted as you go along

Thanks a million Badcat, Ill take a look at those. Ive just had a reading of 4.8... I cant believe it !!! Ive just got back from having my bloods taken and i visit the nurse next week - its such a shame my hard work wont show at this review.. I cant wait to gloat hahahah.

PS - I love cats too - 2 Maincoons and a Moggie ( but we dont say that when he`s listening!)

Hiya - may help, may not, but I use an app on my Android phone - MyFitnessPal - which lists loads of ready made, and 'basic' foods together with their carb/fat/protein contents.

Keeps an eye on what you're eating, calories and carb counts for the day - finding its really helping so far, but am really new to this.

Collins Gem do a super little pocket/bag sized carbohydrate guide. Got mine on Amazon for £2.00
