Just wondering if anyone has found a food has been on for months then suddenly causing spikes. Tested at 7.7 before my meal and then it was 9.6 two hours after. Chicken salad with avocado and mayo (v low carb) followed by three pieces of walnut drizzled in 85% choc. That’s it. This has never caused a spike before. I’m just wondering if the 5 mints I had are now causing problems. I love Smints and eaten them occasionally for several weeks. Could these suddenly cause problems or am I just stressed? Ahhh. Can’t get my levels down for over a week now since a stessy day with my in laws . Thanks

You were just inside the 2 point rise so not really a massive spike :) for me personally a 7.7 before eating would be too high for me - what had you eaten in the time before your 7.7 test? What was on your salad - everyone's idea of salad is different and a large salad with peppers, tomatoes etc can add up to a fair few carbs, do you add up your carbs?

Sorry for all the questions but the more info you can give can help with advice :)

As to the mints how many carbs in 5 mints? As I don't eat them can't help there but I am assuming they are ordinary mints so will be pure little sugar hits- maybe they are the culprit:)

I’ve been having high readings for over a week now since my visit to the outlaws and a big argument re them with my husband. Diet been the same as normal and even same meals I’ve had before. I’m having huge adrenaline surges every time I think about the situation and can’t seem to switch my brain off. Really annoying me.

Mints can’t be weighed as do small and don’t seem to have spiked me before. They are sugar free.

Looking back at my food diary I can’t see anything particular that stands out apart from being pi55ed off!! Can’t seem to relax but just wondered if one can suddenly find that my chicken, lettuce, avocado, cucumber and tomato salad could suddenly be a problem. Only 4 baby plum tomatoes and a tsp if full fat mayo.
I add a rough carb count in my head.

You havent had a spike. 2 point or under rise is not a spike. You have higher background blood sugars, hence your starting point being 7.7, which then pushes your post meal figure higher.

if you had started at 5, for example, your blood sugars would only have been 7 after eating.

Stress and upset causes higher blood sugar levels, as does adrenaline. Its not the meal. Have some good vibes for the conflict and aftermath.

Thanks for the info :) - with what you've said I agree with @lucylocket61 it is more than likely the stress, I am going through one of the most stressful times in my life and I find using mindfulness and relaxation techniques do help - be kind to yourself things will get better and settle down, try not to stress about your bs you are doing and eating the right things and worrying about them only adds fuel to the fire so to speak :)

Thanks for your comments. Really struggling at the moment. Thought I had this under control but obviously not! X

Hi Flora i really can understand this, not being able to turn your brain off, after a stressful time especially when it's to do with a family member. I was like that when i was young so don't know your age but one thing i have learnt and i am 64 now is that life is so very short. Let the family member go, i mean in your head because it can, and probably has effected your sugar levels. Look after you. Oh and i meant to say i am by no means an expert in this but not letting go just means more suffering for yourself, in-laws,out-laws.lol. Probably are not even aware of how your feeling and life just goes on happily for them Take care.

Thanks Moggely. I know I need to let it go. I’ve tried every technique I can think of but the thoughts of them just keep popping into me head then huge surges of adrenaline. They don’t know about my diagnosis as they are very judgmental people so I don’t want that on top of their usual narcissistic ways. Will keep persevering xx

@Flora123 I wasn't aware they didn't know of your diagnose so sorry about that. Yes it's really hard to let go. My way was, it's my life and i want it to be peaceful it took a good while but i'm older now so that makes a difference i think. Wasn't so good when i was young though as i said. Narcissistic, oh my yes i can see why your sugars are up now. Is it possible to maybe just give them a miss for awhile narcissistic people can be brutal. They love to make people suffer.

breathing in a controlled way helps keep adrenaline surges down and can also stop an adrenaline surge getting too bad. Do you think you might be having panic attacks?

You have got your diabetes under control. Its the effect of other people on your automatic systems which appears to be the problem now.

I breath in to the count of three, and out to the count of three, about a dozen times. Then I give about 5 ordinary breathes, then repeat as long as I need to until I feel calmer. It physically removes the nasty shaky feeling. And no one knows you are doing it. Let me know if I can help further.

Oh, and let the thoughts happen. Dont fight them, accept the thoughts, and that you are having a correct and reasonable response to a bad situation. Then, if you can, image the though inside a balloon, you are holding the string of, and image letting the balloon go and float off. There is no limit on how many times you can do this.

best wishes.
