Hi. I was just wondering/curious as to what kind of foot care some people have? I know it's important to look after your feet. So does anyone see a chiropodist? If so, how often? What kind of things do they look out for or take care of for diabetics?

Just curious. :)
 
Hello, my nurse check my feet every 6 months & if she thinks I should visit the chiropodist she will refer me. I've seen her twice in the last 2 years.
 
I get my feet checked every 6 months at the hospital, if there was ever a problem I was told I would be referred which so far hasn't happened yet!
 
Hello. You are entitled to an annual foot inspection by the diabetes nurse at your surgery, but the test I get is limited to a sensor probe on my toes. You may find it's up to you to ask to be referred for more detailed examination.

There are several threads on here about different sensations people feel in their feet, from heat or cold to pain or a feeling of walking on cobbles.

There are also several threads on appropriate shoes etc, based entirely on our own experiences. And of course at our own expense!

I had a (private) reflexology treatment recently which increased my knowledge of my feet but we agreed this kind of treatment isn't likely to affect conditions of the feet caused by diabetes.
 
I've had problems with my feet for 15 years (peripheral neuropathy)... I've had 4 foot ulcers, one landed me with a weeks stay in hospital on an antibiotic drip so it is a serious complication of uncontrolled high sugar levels.....any minor cuts or injury on feet now then I'm straight to docs or even A&E if doc not available.
Dont underestimate foot problems with diabetes as it could turn really nasty
 
I attend a podiatrist every 6 weeks - at my own cost of course. He has been informed that I'm a T2 and he examines my feet closely whilst cutting my nails and removing any hard skin. My DN tested my feet at my first 3 month check but, as I will not see her again until December I'm happy that any problems will be picked up by my podiatrist.
 
I see a Podiatrist once every 12 months through my gp surgery, did use to get my feet checked at the hospital when attending the diabetes clinic but that stopped a few years ago.
 
the nurse last checked my feet may last year and said they don,t need looking at
she also said i could get two 10 minutes treatments with a chiropidist in one yesr
 
Not sure how but my partner goes to see the podiatrist every 8 weeks approx....was referred originally by the diabetic nurse but now just has repeat appointments made through the podiatry service....this is at no cost to himself.
Don't know if age is a consideration when deciding if someone should pay for treatment but he is of retirement age.....if may of course differ depending on the area in which you live.
 
I can't remember ever seeing a podiatrist. My feet are checked every now and again at my clinic but thankfully Ive never had any diabetes related foot complications.

I look after them though. I always make sure I wear good slippers around the house (strangely, female ones as I've always found them more comfortable, though it stops there honest !)

I always check how hot the water is before getting into the bath and I make sure they are dried properly when out.

I will only purchase high cotton content socks and will make sure I take special attention when buying shoes. I do not believe in this "breaking them in" thing! If they do not feel as though I've had them for a 6 months when trying out a new pair in a shop I won't buy them.
