Hi. I never posted on here before I've been type 1 for 47 years I'm 49. I've just had two toes amputated due to cutting top of toe with nail clippers. No feeling in feet. Foot now infected after amputation blood sugars gone through the roof. It doesn't seem to lower no matter how much I inject. No ketones. Anybody else experience anything like this.
Many thanks

Hi @Shallie , and welcome to the forum!
I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Infections are known for giving us stubborn high sugars and the stupid thing is that the high sugars are making it harde for your foot to heal.

Are you under specialist care for both the foot and your diabetes? What does your endocrinologist or diabetes nurse say about the high sugars?

Wish you all the best, stay safe!

Please give them a phonecall. If your specialist doesn't want you in hospital, are you sure he is aware of the infection in your foot? If it needs hospital care it needs hospital care. Who is treating the infection at the moment?
If you can't reach the specialist, perhaps you can contact your GP.

Well this is the strange thing. My dsn redressed foot on Monday. I took blood readings with me. She said yes that's due to infection. Got a doctor to look at foot and he's taken me off antibiotics. I don't understand why.

Please call them again and ask for more information. It sounds pretty serious to me but we're not doctors here and we can't treat you. Make sure a doctor is aware and ask if it's right that the infection isn't treated at the moment.

Hi and welcome @Shallie

All I can suggest is that you ring your surgery again and ask for a phone appointment to discuss the situation, including the removal of the antibiotics.

You haven't mentioned when your next dressing change will be, but they may think that is sufficient monitoring? I don't know.
In the meantime, if you can't get through to your surgery, you can always ring the 111 nhs helpline for advice.
And please monitor the situation closely. Any swelling, heat, changes in skin colour around the dressing, etc. and contact someone immediately.

Best wishes, and please keep us informed of how things go?

Hi @Shallie ,

OK, I would advise you to phone 111 or your surgury. A diabetic with an open infection should be seen quickly.
The closest experince I had was an accident to my wrist with an angle grinder that uncharacteristically turned nasty pretty quick last year..

What insulins are you using? Have you tried changing the cartridge or vial to a fresh one..
Your insulin may have gone off? Please keep testing.
