Foot Pain

A few days before i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes i started getting a sharp pain in the arch of my foot and also in the big toe. It happens in both feet from time to time without warning.

The only way i can describe it, is it feels like something is inside my foot with a nail and they are trying to push the nail through my skin. The pain is awful!! It can happen a few times over a minute or so and then it disappears.

I have never had the pain before till the week i was diagnosed. Could it be related to the diabetes?

Hi and welcome. I was diagnosed in September, having gone to the doctor because I was getting numbness/tingling in the tips of my left hand fingers, weakness in my legs and cramps/aching in my legs and feet. All of which came on really quickly and increased intensity over a month. The doctor told me that these were all things associated with diabetes. I have had the sharp pains as well. I am not a doctor, and would recommend you check with yours, but would suggest it is likely diabetes related. My doctor reckons that overtime with good management and diet these will go away or significantly improve. I will be interested in what others say.

I had similar experience before I was diagnosed. The diabetic nurse did some tests and I had lost all my feelings in my gig toe..... All caused by high blood sugars. Now my bs are much lower i don't get any more tingling / pains and I am pretty sure I have feelings in my big toe back again (but have not been tested).

As you now have diabetes you are entitled to a annual check-up on your feet by a Podiatrist, if the discomfort continues you should see your gp and they may refer you over if they can't find the cause of the pain, it's difficult to say with any certainty if it's diabetes related or not.

Thank you all for the replies - i will see my GP and see what he thinks.

I have appointment at the Diabetes Clinic on the 28th of this month and they said they will look at my feet - so i will mention the pain to them as well.

I wouldn't mind i didn't get the pains for over two weeks and this week they are back :)

Hi. Strangely enough I've been getting exactly the same. Like sharp needle like pains in the arch of the foot? I mentioned it to my diabetes foot nurse but she told me to monitor it. I wouldn't have even given this a second thought until I read it on here. It's uncomfortable and like you say only happens now n then.

I have had neuropathy in my feet and legs for many years now, mine began much the same as I am reading here but nowadays the pains and burning are constant for me. It has taken me almost 32 Years of being Diabetic for my feet and leg issues to become this bad, I will not go into details.
The reason I am commenting on this thread is to be a warning to you all - Please bring down your blood sugars and keep them as near to "normal" range non Diabetics as possible BEFORE you end up like me today. You can do it and you can keep it up! I wish there had been people around to advise me when I first became Diabetic and to give me warnings like this but there were no forums back then.

Well I'm getting what I think is neuropathy in my toes after 5 years of diabetes. My HbA1c levels have never been good. I am going to ask for a referral to a Neurologist.
