My father who has been type 1 for many, many years appears to have a foot ulcer that has gone on for several months. He has had anti-biotics for infection and dressings but it is causing him immense pain. I want to get this sorted for him but am unsure what to ask for or who to ask. He has been to A&E,a podiatrist and his GP, all of which have not mentioned ulcers or explained what to do. Help?

It would appear that somebody must have had an input as he has been given antibiotics and dressings. You have to go back to the GP and tell him that the ulcer is not getting any better and it is causing considerable pain. Therefore you want some further treatment and painkillers I would have thought.

If your father's Bg control is not good and levels are high, then this will impede healing of such things as ulcers. See your GP.

Hi Possell 123
My T1 Husband had these ulcers recurring, for several years and the podiatrists couldn't get rid of them. His BG was re-set at a much lower level( about 5 - 6; he'd been around 7 - 8 before then) .He's now been free of the ulcers for a year. In the meantime, Pressure bandages were the most helpful thing, but the nurses made fuss about checking circulation. I got fed up waiting for them to do it and bought him some flight socks. It worked! that was the beginning of the cure.
We got the BG down by reducing carbs and reducing insulin in line. I say we, because I'm the ideas person
Hope it turns out as well for your Dad as for my husband and that our experience helps.

Thanks for your words of wisdom . My dad is now in hospital having IV anti-biotics it was also found he has a chest infection which they were more worried about!
