i have been suffering from foot ulcer for 3 years now and have had 2 minor amputations, i now have a further ulcer on the end of my stump.

what i would like to know is what causes them and what can i do to stop them, i am worried now that i will lose my foot or worsr still my leg because of them. :(

High blood sugars can cause the tissue, especially on the feet, to breakdown. But so can anything that rubs or causes pressure. The first thing I would ask is how well are your blood sugars regulated. Then I would probably ask if your shoes (or prosthetic if you have one) is feel uncomfortable or is causing pressure.

If you can get your hands on some raw honey (best), you might want to try applying it to the ulcers. They have been having success with this in the US for the treatment of nonhealing diabetic ulcers that do respond with conventional treatment. Regular honey will also work, but not as quickly as the stuff straight from the hive. There are also some vitamins and supplements you could take that help improve peripheral circulation. Don't have my reference book close by, but if your interested which ones, just post and I'll get them to you. Hope this helps.

The article on the main pages here explains why people with diabetes are prone to non healing ulcers

You must make sure that you get treatment from your doctor/nurses/podiatrist
If there is a specialist clinic near you , try to get referred.
check on the local hospital web pages: You may be lucky and there may be one like this one http://www.londondiabetes.nhs.uk/Servic ... linic.aspx

I know that various methods are used on ulcers in the UK, including honey dressings. (the district nurse tried that on my non diabetic but non-mobile elderly mums leg ulcer... it didn't work, other methods did)
