Hi everyone
What do people do aboht walking on the beach? Recommendations seem to be never walk barefoot anywhere. But I love to walk on the beach and shoes on is just not the same. I'm t2 not on meds and don't have any foot problems (thank goodness for those last two )
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Personally, I walk barefoot in the sand. My podiatrist said it's actually very good, and our feet, ankles and calves have to work, walking on soft sand, and of course the sand is an exfoliant.

I don't recommend you follow my lead and impale your foot on a rusty nail though, because that bled a lot and hurt! Fortunately, When I pulled out the nail (yes, it stuck in) it bled a lot and between that and the salty sea water it was cleaned. It healed just fine.

You have to make your own mind up, as there are certainly more risks to walking barefoot on a surface that so easily hides unwanted treasures.

Anyone with loss of feeling or other issues should think very carefully before they consider doing as I did.

1- High blood sugars make it more difficult for the body to heal, slower healing makes for more risk of infection, infection makes bg going up more, making it more difficult to heal and so on, potentially leading to very serious problems.
2- Prolongend high bg leads to neuropathy with loss of feeling in many diabetics. So they won't feel a cut or heat, and will possibly notice damage much later than people without neuropathy. Leading to infection and stuff.

I walk barefoot almost anywhere as I: A- Have good blood sugars, B- fine sense in my feet, no neuropathy. And C- Am a stubborn idiot.

I walk barefoot everywhere.. at home, on the beach, in the garden and on the terrace.
I don't have any neuropathy because my blood sugars are usually pretty low.
If you are a well controlled Type 2 I really don't see why you should be any different to any "normal" person..

Aye, that makes three of us. Well, almost. When I am in the garden I am invariably bare footed but I have to wear gloves! Just call me contrary :angelic:

Oooooooooo interesting, have you tried them?

Personally as a T1D feet can be a problem but I do like walking on the sand, fortunately unlike @DCUKMod i have not yet managed to impale my feet on anything.

Now I have said that, just you watch I'll go do that now :D
I have never tried them but always hankered after a pair.. just a shame thy are so damned expensive and the funky colour ones are mostly £100 or more... it seems like with women's shoes the less of them there is the more they cost (I'm looking at you Manolo)... hey ho back to the regular trainers...

Thanks everyone...glad to know that I won't be the only one. I'm moviing to Suffolk soon and will only be about 6 or 8 miles from the coast so I hope to do some beach exploring!
Hi bsandie, I live in Cornwall so there's no way i'm giving up walking barefoot on sandy beaches but will probably wear those slip on rubber thingys if I'm at a rocky part of the coast. We make you own choice with the advice but for me it's the same as when they told me alcohol is probably not a good idea!

It makes sense to try to keep it that way. We felt a bit self-conscious as we carried the bloodied sand down to the sea, to be rid of it. It didn't look good to just leave it where it was. Oh, and I took the nail home with me for a couple of days, just in case it went all manky.

I had been diagnosed about a month at this point, 4500 miles away from the NHS. Oooops.

I had to google Manolo. Ohh My Days! I need him to adopt me.

I walk bare foot at the beach and home, but I am careful at places where the possibility of Stone Fish may be lurking if I am walking in the sea it's self.
