Forgot to inject Levemir this morning...

Good Afternoon!

My numbers have been running a little high today.. have injected for my meals and corrected but they are still running a little on the high side... now im thinking its quite likely i forgot to inject Levemir this morning..i can't remember if i did or i didn't but its looking possible that i didn't... what do i do about that? Seeing as its 4.30 in the afternoon! .. thank you.

Do you take just one injection in the morning or one in the morning and one at night? Just how high are your BG's running, are you unwell, stressed, etc?

If it were me, and I was on one daily morning injection, then I'd be taking half my normal dose 12 hours before I'd normally take it. So if I took 20u at 8am, then I'd take 10u at 8pm, keep a close eye on my BG and use my bolus insulin to correct any high BG's. I'd probably want to do a couple of tests during the night to make sure I wasn't going high.

If I took a split dose, morning and night - I'd just use my bolus insulin to correct up until the time when I require my evening basal injection. I'd still keep an eye on my BG, especially for the few hours post basal injection as it doesn't really start working till around 5 hours after taking it.

You should check with your diabetes team, we're not allowed to tell you what to do here. You're in an unfortunate situation because if you're unsure whether you've taken your basal or not, then you may take too much or too little...

Been at 19 at my highest today .. No ketones. I feel well, not stressed, i don't feel like i'm running high at all really which is odd..
I usually take 14u in the morning and 9u at night.
Ok thanks that makes sense.. i understand, thanks for the advice.. i will keep a close eye on it tonight. First timer for forgetting my basal! I'm sure it won't be the last!

Same thing happened to me with Lantus a couple of weeks ago - I usually give a shot before going to bed and like most of us we have a routine to ensure we actually give it. In the morning I got up to test myself - it was high and then noticed my Lantus pen was still in my sweat shirt pocket where I was warming it up the night before - the phone rang - I took the call and that's where I went wrong with forgetting to take it.
So it had been at least 8 hours (had no clue what to do) so I took a half dose in the morning - tested myself several times during the day but I was running consistently high (15 - 18) - I then decided to take almost a full regular dose that evening and here again I was running high the following day. It basically took 2 days for my Blood sugars get back in line and relatively predictable - If it were to happen again (hope not) I think I'll just skip the shot altogether - eat very little and try to compensate with my fast acting insulin see if that works better.
It certainly made me feel vulnerable and very experimental - let me know how you make out.

We all forget if we've taken our basal or not, it's a pain at times. As you take Levemir, have you heard of or seen Novo Nordisk's Echo pens? You should be able to get them on your prescription (or at least free from your diabetes team). Think I'll get myself two at my next visit to the Clinic, as I forget if I've taken basal too sometimes...

Glad you're on a split dose, should mean you don't have to perform too many bolus corrections before getting your next regular basal injection.

One thing I forgot to mention, is your insulin in date and still potent? Might be worth ditching both cartridges and starting fresh (especially as you can't be certain whether you took your insulin or not). Just food for thought...:)
 
I was so engrossed in The Australian Open (tennis) this morning (Roger Federer, my hero) I forgot to take my Lantus. This happened a couple of days ago too for the same reason! Both occasions I didn't take it until one and a half hours after my usual time. The readings though seemed okay.

Just new on here, so this is my 1st post.

Sound advice above. I've recently moved to these Pens and they are brilliant. Just one piece of advice - try to get a Blue and a Red one, that way its easier to tell them apart. One for Bolus and one for Basal. Cuts down the chance of making mistakes.
 
Good morning fellow diabetics!

My bloods went down to 13 last night slowly...i kept everything pretty carb free yesterday and tried to manage by BG levels with Novorapid until i could take my evening Basal.. and glad to say it all seems to have worked itself out, woke up with a reading of 7, so it seems i had just forgotten to inject yesterday morning.
