Forum newbie from Bristol

Hello! I'm a forum newbie from Bristol. Not so newbie with Type 1, as a mum. My 2 and a half year old boy was diagnosed at 20 months old, just a month after we arrived in the UK. Moved from South Australia last March, so settling in with the toddler plus the diabetes was no fun. But, we'll be here for nearly a year now. And it would be fair to say that I am only starting to settle in. :shifty: :shifty: My son is on Insulatard + Novorapid injections and his BG has always been all over the place. I would definitely like to learn more about how other people have been managing their diabetes. I would also love to learn from parents with kids w/type1. Most important of all, I would like to meet people, and if I'm lucky make some friends. It has been one of the loneliest things, especially not having the support system of relatives and good friends within reach. My son's been an absolute angel with it, and obviously doesn't know the difference..at least not yet. But it's very heartbreaking especially when he gets severe hypos -- which he gets every week. Now, I'm studying Nutrition in hopes of using that to help him in the future. And if it works, that will be my new career. :mrgreen:
 
I'm not T1 but welcome to the forums. Bless you and your little ones. You've certainly got alot on your plate at the moment, but you will get plenty of support on here. :)

Hi Oz! And welcome. Afraid I'm a type 2 as well, but you'll get some type 1s soon I'm sure. Meanwhile, here's a link to a general bit of good info Daisy the moderator normally sends. She'll be along soon too.

Reading through the discussions posted, and how members respond, I think I'm in the right place. It's a shame I didn't realize sooner that the forum existed. :eh:

new to forum aswell, it's great for info & support isn't it? i've been t1 for nrly 12 years, but was diagnosed as a 26 yr old, can't imagine being a parent of a child with it. i have a 9 yr old & 2 yr old, when one of them drinks more than usual or goes to the loo more than usual, out comes my tester!

i live in weston-super-mare, not far from bristol, my hubby works there & brother lives there so find myself in bristol now & again, if you ever want to meet up please pm me, our 2 yr olds could play together! i emigrated to queensland with my hubby & son, when he was 2, in 2005, we returned in 2007 (i couldn't hack living so far away from my family!) so know what it's like living so far away from home.

Queensland is beautiful. But yeah, Oz can be quite isolating. I think that's one of the things I love about Bristol - it's got everything you need (historically and culturally) and if you ever need a break, you can get to the next town or city or (country!) quite quickly too.

Last but not least, I'm sorry to hear that you've got diabetes...and that you have to worry about your children getting it, too. It's no fun, but we do the best we can anyway. In reverse, I test myself if I ever drink more than usual. I've got another 6 years or so to learn if I could be Type 1, too. There was a mum in the diabetes clinic whose child was diagnosed first, and a couple of months later or so, she was diagnosed, too.

Hi! I live in Qld and my son was diagnosed as an 8 month old. I lived in Northampton in 1996 & 1997 but haven't been back to the UK since. I must say I haven't missed the freezing cold Winter!

Khaleb has nearly had diabetes for 5 years and is well controlled. His blood sugar levels have some terrible moments during illness and a few foods don't agree with him but on the whole it's okay. He is on Levemir (X2 daily) and Novorapid (X3 daily and the odd correction).

A lot of the parents use the Youth Section of this forum so maybe pop a post in there and say hello.

jen...whereabouts are you in qld? hubby worked in brisbane and we lived on the gold coast. we were there 04 (not 05 like my previous post said, mis-type)-07. opposite to you, i really missed the seasons & even the winters! (bonkers i know!) we live in a shoebox now compared to our lush aussie house, but i'm happier.

eialoveschoc...glad you came back! as daisy's put on the bottom of your post, you can PM after you've posted 5 times (weird rule!). that's great you're studying nutrition, you'll be a carb-expert and be able to know much more about how to regulate your little one's levels, and which foods will help to stabilise them. i never learnt to count carbs and balance them with insulin, i'm hoping to get on an education course soon so i can really get a grip on it. (after nearly 12 years of mainly guesswork!) how did you learn about how to use insulin...did they teach you to balance it with carbs? where do you take your little boy...i am trying to get back into the system after 2 years out (after i had daisy i was discharged from southmead hosp with the view to coming back to my local hosp, but didn't get referred back in :evil: ) anyway, i have got the option of going to my local hosp or the 3 main hospitals in bristol, i think the BRI looks good as it's a university hosp , have you got any experience of it?

anyway, after a couple more posts we can PM and arrange a get together!

I'm in Toowoomba, so West of Brisbane. We do get the seasons here unlike living on the coast where you only get a mild Winter and Summer. I lived in a 2 up/2 down in England and hated it. Love my spare bedrooms, ensuite, extra living space, garage and yard. I also love my kitchen not also being my laundry.
