Hi my name is Daphne and have been T2 for approx 4 years. It's in the family (G/father, Mother and Brother so far) so guess it was only a matter of time! I was controlling it with diet for 2 years and my levels were ave 43 (5.8ish) on Hbc1a test then I was put onto statins (cholesterol of 5) which sent my levels to 58 (7.2) so I was put onto Stiglapin. I came off the statins 4 mths later due to feeling 'rubbish' and my levels lowered again - last test was 40. I've now come off Stiglapin and will have another test in 3 mths to see if I can stay off permanently so I'm currently 'flying solo' again ie diet only!

Welcome Daphne. Wow, that's one of the most significant impacts on BGs due to statins I've seen.

Hello Daphne and welcome to the forum :) Well done on your progress!

Hi daphne - well done on controlling so well. As for the statins - seems to me some are affected by them and others not. I am currently on them as an eye condition warranted keeping my cholesterol levels at no higher than. 4. My borderline type 2 diagnosis came after I had started on them - but I was equally told I needed to lose weight and that in the docs opinion would take me out of the diabetic frame. !!! I can't disagree that weight is very much a factor in the diabetic spectrum especially for me as there's no history of it in the family - so not genetic as for some folk.
Anyway following the excellent advice from members on this forum I have to date lost 12lbs and feel great. Although more to get rid of still. I have been thoroughly enjoying the LCHF regime which amuses me really when I'm watching my cholesterol levels.!!!! all the foods I enjoy the most juggled into very appetising meals and mostly high fat and hunt the carbs !!!! I don't have a follow up appointment to see the doc but as I know my annual review is in November I will leave it till then and hopefully there will be good news when my blood results come back. I have bought a glucose monitor and sticks etc to not get complacent - but pretty happy so far. Can't get below 5 on a fasting reading which is what my doc is looking for apparently . I only once reached 10 mmols . two hours after food. From then on I have never been above 8.5 mmols Think most of our members here would say that's acceptable. I've never been on medication and hopefully won't need to be in the future.
Good luck - and if course welcome to the forum .

Weird my type 2 also started after starting statins can not help but think they are responsible :meh:

The American Food and Drug Administration has updated its advice on statin risks. Amongst other things, it is advising consumers and health care professionals that:

  • People being treated with statins may have an increased risk of raised blood sugar levels and the development of Type 2 diabetes.

FDA will be changing the drug labels of popular statin products to reflect these new concerns. (These labels are not the sticker attached to a prescription drug bottle, but the package insert with details about a prescription medication, including side effects.)
