Found out today & confused. Help please

Fruits I've been eating are clemetines/satsumas, bananas and granny smith apples. Are they bad ones? Is corn on the cob with low fat margarine allowed and a good thing to eat?

Berries are best. Avoid fruits that don't grow in this country like oranges and especially bananas. Bananas are very bad they turn to sugar as soon as you put them in your mouth. A small apple may be OK.

I doubt you will be given a meter. It is most likely you will be told not to test. Just buy your own and do what we all do - ignore the "do not test" comments, it is just them cost saving. How else can you control your levels?

Avoid corn on the cob - very bad.

Just made some scrambled eggs, couldn't think what else to have. Then I cooked a tin of chopped tomatoes only to read they are bad as well so I'm not eating them.

What monitor should I get

The most cost effective monitor that many of us use (cheapest strips) is the SD Codefree available from Amazon and elsewhere.

Well done for coming on here and starting the right things to get yourself under control. It can be done!

Hi and welcome!

I'm very impressed at how seriously you are taking this - it's a really good sign that you will get on top of this disease quite quickly.

You asked about blood glucose monitors.
There are hundreds out there, and I think most of them do the job. One of the most basic, and cheapest to run, is the Codefree (I just switched to it, because it's saving me £££)
You can buy monitors in your nearest high street pharmacy (boots).
Or a Codefree from Amazon, or eBay.

Thanks will be getting a monitor on amazon now. I am taking it very seriously because of how bad I've been feeling. It's been a wakeup call tbh

Yes, if I stray too far into eating carbs, I feel dreadful too.

It's a great reminder to be good!

Good luck, you are doing the right thing. There is lots of support on here, but I guess you can tell already. Stress isn't good though, try to stay calm.

Thanks, I had a good cry earlier. It just hit me how much I've got to change and the consequences of not doing so. I woorked with a guy who was diagnosed type 2 and he just stuffed his face at lunch and we would all tell him not to eat that stuff but he didn't listen and collapsed one day and was in a coma for weeks.

I'll need to get used to reading it and stuff so will have to post here foor help and advice until I get the hang of reading it and knowing what the results mean. I assumed it would be like £100 or something for the machine but it's cheap so that's why I wanted to check it was right.

Yes.
I don't know how many tests you will end up using.
The general rule, when you are new, and finding out what foods affect you, is to test as follows:

On waking - your early morning, fasting BG level gives you an overall indication of how things are going. The closer to normal the better.

Before food - gives you a baseline to judge how much effect the food will have.

2 hours after you start eating - you can test at 1 hour too, but the NHS guideline for type 2 diabetics is to be under 7.8 at 2 hours. You can also see how much a food raises your BG (blood glucose).

Lots of us also test at bedtime.

Those are a good starting point.

With the Codefree, testing, 10 x a day, 50 strips will last 10 days and cost about 6-7£
With 5 tests a day, it will obviously cost half as much and last twice as long. :)

If you are anything like me, you will go through a mad frenzy of testing, mapping out all your regular foods, then gradually ease off when you know them all. After that, you'll probably test less, unless you're eating a new food.

Just remember to wash your hands carefully in soap and warm water, and dry them properly, before each test. If you get a very unexpected reading (once you get the hang of it) either lower or higher than you were expecting, don't worry, just test again. We do get rogue readings sometimes. Also remember no meters are entirely accurate. They are all generally plus or minus 15% wrong, but for us Type 2's this doesn't matter as we are only looking at trends and don't need full accuracy.

I forgot to tell my doctor today sometimes when I go for a wee it looks very dark like tea and maybe a bit tinted with blood. I only just remembered when I went to the toilet just now and it was like that. It's not every time but about once a day it looks like that. I know it''s gross but I did take a picture. Right now I am very hot and clammy my clothes are damp. I really am frightened this is bad and I'm gonna end up in hospital. I'm so scared.

Ok, I'm here.

Urine gets very dark when we don't drink enough. And that is easy to do in hot weather like this.

I suggest the first thing you do I drink lots and lots of water. Can you manage a couple of pints? More if poss.

Do you have any back pain? Or burning when you wee? Kidney infections and cystitis are usually painful.
So you would probably know if you had either of those.

And do you know if your doctor has run any kidney function tests?

I've drunk loads of water today. I will drink more tomorrow. Until a few weeks ago I did pee a lot and it was light in colour. I noticed this change in colour the past few weeks about once a day. The rest of the time it's ok. That's why I forgot

Got lower back pain yes but no pain weeing. I think the back pain is just my bad back though. The first test I think they did kidneys, anemia, diabetes and thyroid. I remember because as he checked the boxes on the blood form he told me what he was testing for

Have you done any googling? I always look up anything medical on the web. It's amazing how much info is out there, but of course it's only a rough intro. Nothing beats actual medical test results...
